Did your friend do a clean OS install, rather than moving an OS to the new build and did he update the BIOS before installing the OS (which is pretty much a requirement for Ryzen)? Also, did he install the latest chipset drivers from the AMD website (if Ryzen) or the appropriate manufacturer's website after doing the base OS install? What OS and parts are involved?

Yes Its a brand new build with windows USB drive. No he didn't update the BIOS before installing the OS. He did install the latest drivers from his MB website.

The OS and parts generally don't have much to do with an error like this.

We tried this and none of it worked.

Of course they do. This is typical of a Ryzen build where the chipset drivers haven't been installed and/or the BIOS hasn't been updated.

Chipset doesn't have anything to do with the ethernet port. This is a separate controller ;)

K.

This error pops up because the network interface can't reach the DHCP server, typically your router. Try a different ethernet cable and make sure the driver is up to date.

Update the BIOS and use the chipset drivers from AMD, not from Asrock. The new AMD chipset drivers came out a few days ago and are on the site, version 17.40. Use the Lan drivers from Asrock but not the chipset drivers. Follow this guide:

You say "typical" like it's a common issue.. I've seen very few people post about having connection issues with Ryzen lol.

OP are you using ethernet to the motherboard or do you have an add-in card you're using?

Sorry to ask, but do you mind sending the link? I don't want to accidentally download the wrong update.

I really do appreciate this. Do I download the AMD RAID Driver and RAIDXpert Utility also? Or just the drivers?

Not the RAID drivers, just the top ones. Once the BIOS is updated, install the chipset drivers and the LAN driver. It should be a Realtek one. Sometimes the other drivers at mobo manufacturer sites, such as the AMD all in one drivers, can also contribute to problems like this, messing with the ethernet adapter drivers and other things, hence just the LAN driver from Asrock and the chipset drivers directly from AMD.

You can download this from a mac laptop, to usb correct? Then plug it in the new pc?

Yep. As long as your USB stick is FAT32 or exFAT

Yes, you should be fine, and Windows should see it just fine, as it's a standard Windows file on the USB. But do update the BIOS before installing the new chipset drivers and do use/reinstall the Realtek LAN driver from Asrock after updating the BIOS too.

Did he flash the BIOS? After flashing the BIOS (from the BIOS, not in Windows), reboot, go into Windows, install the chipset drivers and the Asrock Lan driver, reboot when asked.

So he got to the Lan driver driver and it asked, express install or custom, which one does he click?

And he updated the BIOS first right? If so, then we can move onto other things. For one thing, have you tried resetting/power cycling the router that the ethernet cable is connected to?

Yes, he just tried this.
