New Build in Spring. Motherboard now?

Nicolai

I have a chance to get a free motherboard (up to 150€) but only if I order it during January. If I'm going for an Intel build for my new render/gaming PC, will the motherboard become obsolete by new tech in 4-6 months from now? Are there any major game changers coming that would make it wiser to wait till spring and just get all the parts at the same time?

I think it's a good call to grab your motherboard free right now. There is one game changer on the way - Ryzen 2 (which will fit on the old motherboards), and in fact that might convince you to do a Threadripper build instead of Skylake-X or Coffee Lake, but we don't have much information on how it's going to perform.

We have a NEW and GLORIOUSER-ER-ER PSU Tier List Now. (dammit @LukeSavenije stop coming up with new ones)

You can check out the old one that gave joy to so many across the land here

If it's free you might as well get it and sell it if you don't want it... And yeah the next Intel CPUs come with 8 cores
