If an an internet application does not work in router mode* but works fine in bridge mode, what is the problem?

* "router mode" and "bridge mode" are available options in my router's menu. When I select "bridge mode" WiFi disappears and only ethernet cable works in my house. There is 1 router in my house.

Exact router model name is: "Ubee EVW3226". My ISP is UPC Hungary.

When I use router in "router mode" I forward all ports which are required by that certain application that I'm using. I also added firewall inbound rules and exceptions correctly. Ports have been checked and are open. I configured settings correctly, triple checked.

Despite all this, that application refuses to work but as soon as I change to "bridge mode" it magically works. Any help?

Thanks.

Sounds like you've got a double NAT. You should check if your modem has a built in router.

I don't understand that. My router is kind of like...my modem? Look at the picture.

I forgot to mention that when I change to "bridge mode" the router's access page alters itself automatically! It'll be 192.168.100.1 INSTEAD OF 192.168.0.1 (default router address on "router mode") Also in bridge mode when I access 192.168.100.1 most of the settings are unavailable, I can only see "SYSTEM and BASIC" tab. Nothing else.

You have a modem/router combo. Bridge modem makes it in to a modem only. Turns off all the things that make it a router. I dont know why things are not working. It could be an issue with the router portion. But, because you can switch it to bridge mode, you can just buy any router now and hook it up. Kinda cool your ISP allows you to do this, most US ISP's you have to beg them to put their shit box in bridge mode.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

Thanks for the info. So it's not a "double NAT" problem as the dude above your posts said?

Also, if I buy a shitty cheap router (like really, like a slow crap for 10 bucks or someth) and connect it to my current router with ethernet cable, won't my internet speed be awful?

Double NAT happens if you have two routers connected together. You dont buy a cheap shitty router. You buy a decent router, so your internet is not awful.

But uhm...how will that solve my problem? xD

Most ISP supplied routers are shit. If your current one works in bridge mode then its just acting like a modem. You cant hook more than one machine up to a modem, unless you pay for extra IP addresses. Your basically taking their shitty router part out of the equation. With most combo devices I have seen, the modem half works, but the router half is utter shit. The fact is, if it wont work in router mode, then what else are you going to do? You can ask your ISP for a new unit, but Im not sure how it works over there when it comes to that. Here in the US, we pay rental fees for modems from ISP's. So many of us buy our own. But if you rent from the ISP you can demand a new one. Hopefully one that works. Or buy a nice router and have good WiFi coverage, and use your ISP supplied box as a modem. The Choice is yours.

So you're saying my router is shit. I kinda agree with that. I might buy a new one...

I assumed you were using a router in addition to your modem. As stated above, you can fix your problem by setting the modem to bridge mode and buying yourself a router.

Yeah that's what I'm gonna do. But simply using a modem is a security risk no?

You can only connect one device to a modem. Its the router that allows you to use the 1 ip address your ISP gives you with multiple devices. Plus a modem does not have a firewall built in like a router.

For the most part, the modem will be fine sitting on the public internet. However, there are some settings you want to make sure are disabled. (primarily remote management access)

You do however want to make sure your Router has a built-in NAT & Firewall. Pretty much all consumer grade routers comes with a built-in NAT and Firewall that will provide good enough security.
