We do indeed need to reform our education system. Such as:

  • Teaching our children how to think, not what to think. Teach them to question things and ask questions.

Neil D. Tyson has a great quote about this, “We spend the first year of a child's life teaching it to walk and talk and the rest of its life to shut up and sit down. There's something wrong there.”

  • Teaching them how things function, the how and why of things, not rote memorization so they can pass a test.

Richard Feynman has a great quote on this very subject, "You can know the name of a bird in all the languages of the world, but when you're finished, you'll know absolutely nothing whatever about the bird... So let's look at the bird and see what it's doing -- that's what counts. I learned very early the difference between knowing the name of something and knowing something."

  • Make subjects more engaging, especially science and math.
  • Stop funneling children through the system that are failing to meet the requirements to advance a grade.
  • Keep religion out of public schools. (Young Earth Creationism/Creationism in our Science classes)(Yes it occurs).
  • Hire teachers that are actually qualified.
  • Pay the teachers what they should be making.
  • Stop cutting the school budget for things like Art and Music, etc.
  • Stop teaching things from one view point (left/right, Democrat/Republican, Conservative/Liberal etc. Personal ideologies have no place in the class room unless it is a philosophy class).

These are just a few of the things that desperately need to occur. Sadly they probably won't happen in my lifetime.

Hire teachers who know how to teach.

Don't force them to take "Core" classes.

Hire staff who understand that they're there to help the students and not themselves.

What do you define as "Core" classes? I would define them as Math, Science, English and History. You don't want to send a bunch of individuals out into the world that are less than proficient in Math, Science and English now would you? History is important but not as much as those 3 in my opinion. We already have a major problem with a lack of comprehension when it comes to those 3/4 subjects as it is.

I mean if someone is majoring in Programming, it's no use giving them a class that doesn't pertain to programming like history

It does if you want a well rounded education. The core classes should be what you are majoring in, I agree. But you are required to take general education classes for very good reasons. That should not change. Making ones higher education myopic to the point where all the classes they have are related to their subject of study is a bad idea. Overspecialization is a bad thing.

That being said, I tested out of all my GE courses in College. I focused on my Core classes (Computer Hardware/software, Networking and Security). I did take electives like Photography, Humanities and a few other classes. Many of the GE courses in College are not taught in K-12, thus they are a much needed addition to ones knowledge base.

I'd rather save money and learn that stuff on my own time, I don't need a committee deciding what I need to pay for in school. That's one of the main problems with college students today anyway

You could always elect to test out of said courses. I know most institutions allow you to do so.

The problem with not enforcing GE classes is they serve as a benchmark of sorts. If a student goes into a GE course and is struggling with it, it would then be a disservice to that person to skip over that subject matter and send them out into the world with an obvious deficit. To assume someone knows about subject x is a slippery slope. If everyone only learns what they are majoring in we would have a bunch of people that are highly knowledgeable about that field of study, but dumb as a box of rocks when it comes to everything else. That is not something that is beneficial to them or society.

Like I said, It's better to let people educate themselves. No one but me should decide how/what I need to learn in life.

Then by that logic K-12 should be optional. We should be able to decide that we don't need to go to school. You think the world is rife with idiots now....

The best tool for learning is self motivation. The education system, even on the college level, has "teachers" and "professors" that spews BS ideology on students as if they are fact. Even worse when they push their political views on people who trust them for education. If you want to learn more, independently research. And if you're a teacher, stick to actually teaching, leave your ideals at home where they belong.

Outside of the basics like math or spelling, you often times learn more independently than the white-washed curriculum that teaches from a handbook.

Yes. You don't know how many times I've seen teachers blatantly giving out extreme bias to the students and force feeding them one political view. Also me having been ridiculed for my beliefs and other stances my entire life.

Ok, even if we only take into consideration College level classes, the same point holds true. You end up with people who know a lot about very little and nothing else.

I tidied up my post a tad, but the opinion is still valid. Whether it's hardcore left or hardcore right, the college level should focus on the facts and not even bring to the discussion something from their political affiliations. That stuff needs to stay out of the  classroom.

I agree completely unless the class is a philosophy class or something that has a constructive platform for such bias. If the bias is part of a debate and not taught as "scripture" then I think it is fine.
