Hi, i have recently bought a asus gtx 1060 6gb, i am pretty sure that i am getting a cpu bottleneck.

i have a intel core i5 4450 3.2ghz, lga 1150 socket with 16gb of ram ddr3

i am unsure of if i should buy a i7 of the same socket or if those cpu's are just too outdated for the newer hardware?

I tested with msi after burner and i am getting 100% cpu usage playing battlefield 1, but my graphics card is at 100% but it is dipping down too 70 to 85% whilst playing which is causing me too have some stuttering issues.

so i guess my question is should i just completely replace my motherboard for a newer ddr4 lga 1151, or would a better lga 1150 socket i7 be decent enough to run with my gpu.

i also have a corsair 650w psu

any help would be great, kind of a newbie when it comes too buying new hardware

thanks in advance :)

grab a 4th gen I7, they are really not much behind 7th gen because Intel. 8th gen has an advantage but the added cost of motherboard and RAM makes that a shitty choice so id either get an unlocked I5(if you have a Z87 or Z97 chipset motherboard) or an I7 4770 or I7 4790, or a K SKU of either of those I7s if you have a Z87 or Z97 motherboard

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

What motherboard do you have? Typically I recommend upgrading to the highest end cpu for that socket before upgrading to a new platform if you are just playing games. The i7-4790(or4790k) are still fantastic and more than enough for current games. They can also be found fairly cheap(depends on where you live). So yeah I would recommend the 4790 since buying a whole new platform is very expensive right now.

System Specs

CPU: I7-5820k   MOBO:Asus X99 strix   RAM: 32gb corsair Dominator Platinum 2666mhz   GPU: Gigabyte G1 Gaming 980TI  PSU: Corsair RM1000i

I7-4790 with 1060 6GB here.

my CPU runs at 3.6-4-0Ghz which is significant compared to your i5.

Do u only experience stutter or is your FPS low too ? I mean do u hit  60 on high settings ?

im running a mix of settings to stay around 90fps for my 144Hz screen and most of the time I am at 80 easily.

if u go upgrade i wouldnt recommend any cpu for your current platform. Treat yourelf with new mobo and cpu. Be it i5 or i7 both will handle gaming just fine (last 2-3 gens that is). U dont need to spend money on i7 yet, we are still waiting for devs to optimize for more than 4 cores (yes couple of games actually benefit from i7 but its a needle in the hay stack atm...).

Connection200mbps / 12mbps 5Ghz wifi

My baby: CPU - i7-4790, MB - Z97-A, RAM - Corsair Veng. LP 16gb, GPU - MSI GTX 1060, PSU - CXM 600, Storage - Evo 840 120gb, MX100 256gb, WD Blue 1TB, Cooler - Hyper Evo 212, Case - Corsair Carbide 200R, Monitor - Benq  XL2430T 144Hz, Mouse - FinalMouse, Keyboard -K70 RGB, OS - Win 10, Audio - DT990 Pro, Phone - iPhone SE

thony, my fps is pretty much constantly above 60 on ultra settings, but when a scene gets too busy or there are alot of explosions i get fps drops down to about 45, which really doesen't feel great.

also running my settings lower makes no change, if not makes it worse because of the higher frame rates going up too 120-140fps

my motherboard also isn't an overclocking motherboard, i made the mistake and went the prebuilt route, even though i have owned 2 pcs i have built myself in the past, which was kind of a stupid decision.

i think i will buy a i7 4790 and see how it goes

thanks everyone for your help and getting back too me so quickly,

I had the same issue with my i7's. 100% on the card and the cpu. Wouldn't effect gaming at all except on aimens, I think that's the name of the map. Turning on dx12 in bf1 helped a lot for the cpu but I noticed the gameplay took a hit too. Id try that for now.
