Cheap 1080p Gaming Rig

Any thoughts on this machine? Thinking about building it this summer. All constructive criticism is welcome.

Edit: Here are the answers to the questions it asks in the sticky thread.

1. Budget and Location: Under $600 USD.

2. Aim: Gaming: The games I play now/plan on playing are: Far Cry 3, Crysis 3, BF3/BF4, Trine 1 & 2, Skyrim (Mod heavy)

3. Monitors: One 1080p monitor. May add a small 4:3 monitor for random web pages, pandora, twitch etc. Do not have the room nor money for a surround setup.

4. Peripherals: The computer is the priority right now. I am thinking of buying a cheap microsoft set of m + KB for under $20. I will most likely need windows, but since I am unsure, I have not included it in the budget.

5. Reason for Upgrade: I am currently gaming on an Asus laptop made for productivity work: very fast processor, great for spreadsheets, word documents, etc. But, the graphics card is only a HD 6370M, I can run BF3 640x480 at 30+ FPS, or at 1366x768 at <5 FPS. Drivers would help a lot, but they have not been released for my components in two years.

The VRM of the motherboard is of rather poor quality, you definitely be held back by it if you are planning on overclocking. I'd recommend the Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3 instead, which would work well with a setup like that. Power supply isn't particularly great for the price either, the XFX ProSeries 450w would be a better choice for a slightly lower price.

Otherwise looks fine to me.

EDIT: Actually, missed the part about building it this summer. In that case, I'd recommend posting here1-2 weeks before you actually purchase the system, as prices will have mostly likely changed significantly. Even after a month, that build would become unbalanced because of how frequently components change in price.

I know that the prices will change, but for now how is the machine for that price. I wanted a modular power supply and the XFX one isn't. Also, I really like Asus motherboards so I will probably stick with the one I chose, there is also this board if you think it is any better: Link

Eh, it's not really worth getting a modular unit unless you are looking at a 650w+ unit, because low-wattage units come with so few connectors anyways. You could go with it if you want, but you'll only be saving 2-3 cables at most.

Motherboard is definitely better, though I'm not too sure if it'll be enough for overclocking. Any reason you wish to stick with asus boards in particular?

I like the asus suite of programs it comes with. Also, I trust their build quality and their warranty and tech support.

Edit: I will overclock depending on how good the chip is, I want a quiet machine, so probably 4 GHz max.

Mice are important and an overclocked phenom 2 is a very capable chip :)

I know that mice mice are important. But since I have been gaming on membrane keyboards and the dell mice that come with cheap desktops all my life, I can stand it for another 6 months to a year.

I read an article a few months ago that covers the software side of a budget PC. It was so good that I bookmarked it.

I really recommend quick read. I had no idea there was so many free alternatives to software that costs hundreds/thousands of dollars.

Those are all good programs, but nothing compared to the paid versions, if you have the money. The only software I will need is windows, but I might run linux for a while. Maybe I will get windows from my sisters PC. Or maybe I will get it for my birthday :P
