Do i need to upgrade?

Go to solution Solved by pzspah,

Are you happy with current performance? If yes, don't buy, if no; buy.

I have a AMD Fury and am wondering if i need to upgrade really? Was looking at GTX 1070, but recent videos show some gains in DX12 titles, and am worries i may be losing out on much better price / performance if i buy DX12 ready games.

Future is not DX11 but Vulkan and DX12, am i right that it's stupid to move to Nvidia now? or am i making a good decision?

Guarna: R5 1600, Asrock Taichi, AMD Fury Nitro (Heating space since '15), 16 GB Samsung DDR4 2666 (3000mhz OC) Green PCB ugly stuff.

it's not that it's stupid to move to nvidia, it's that it's stupid to upgrade to a card that offer just a bit more performance...

I would not call it slightly behind it, it only gains in Vulkan and DX12 really.

it's a fair bit behind but i would say the same thing to someone with a GTX 980...the move to a 1070 simply isn't worth it in terms of performance gains versus what you'll end up paying and the hassle to sell your Fury and stuff...maybe if you really crave for more performance swing for a 1080 or a 1080ti but even then...those cards have been out since forever at this time and AMD is a full generation behind them...so IMHO what we consider top-end performance at this moment really ain't that great and it's way too much $$$ for what you get...next gen cards will most likely obliterate those cards to oblivion and you'll feel stupid to have settle for a 1080 at the price they are going for right now.

Also, DX12...vulcan...vulcan is dead, there is 2 or 3 games that uses it and i don't even think there are any more in developement...and everything we saw that is DX12 run like garbage...so yeah.

Upgrade when your system can't perform up to your standards for gameplay, or when you don't get support for your hardware anymore. Or like me I knew it was time to upgrade on a old rig years ago, after the Fan and GPU heat spreader melted off, no I am not kidding.

That's scary.

Fury is still rocking everything, there is only 1 or two games that give it a hard time due to Vram and that's ROTTR max texture setting which looks no different to one below it, and DOOM's Nightmare setting which is locked out. I game at 1080P but can scale most games to 4K with great performance, and more demanding games to 1440P and enjoy better visuals at 1920x1080.

Res changed barely seem to hit the GPU much if at all most of the time, performance is very linear and scales excellently.

The PC gaming market does a great job of marketing new products and making you feel like if you don't upgrade right away with every new release your missing out. But unless your an enthusiast like me, where I build a new computer every year and sell the old one. Most people can make due with their stuff for at least 4 years, then upgrade to a new one.
