New i3 - 8350K 4.0GHz faster than Ryzen 5, Ryzen 7

https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Intel/Core_i3_8350K/7.html

loads of benchmarks showing i3 pulling ahead in a lot of single/dual core benchmarks. It actually scored better than the i9 7900X in Photoshop CS6.

In Far Cry Primal, it topped the charts in lifting the CPU bottleneck.

Minimum FPS is showing SUPER high.

It's cheap. It'll do 5.0GHz guaranteed. No brainer for a new build. That's the only thing I'd suggest other than an older system(used parts). In a few years prices will fall, the multicore is just a "nice to have". The raw single-thread performance of the Core architecture keeps even the i3 head well above water while gaming next to the "big dogs".

Whoo. I love how much the i3 gets to shine, a few years ago I'd not have considered an i3 and just skipped to an i5.

An 8350k is just a 7600k, so none of this is surprising. Most games still favor higher single core performance (as does photoshop). However they also didn't show any frametime graphs, which is where 4c/4t CPUs begin to show their limitations -- and where the 7700k/8600k/8700k become advantageous, not to mention dual GPU and ultra high framerate setups.

Ryzen and Intel's HEDT CPUs have NEVER been the best option for gaming.

P.s. 5ghz is definitely not guaranteed. High 4s, sure. 5, no.

it's basically a 7600k, BUT 5.0 isn't guaranteed, i got 1 on sale for 159.99, it binned 4.9 but it was cheap, in a media pc now.

SL says 58%~ of 8350k will hit 5ghz

I'd pair it with a 1070 ti if i was to do a full build.

Today it's a solid performer, just don't get too hyped about getting 5Ghz. between 4.8 and 5Ghz only 5% improvement is earned at the cost of increased heat, and long therm stability impact.

Keep it real, 4.8 is amazing nonetheless. The extra 5% is placebo.

Its OK now, specially for the price, but gaming goes towards threads, so its faith is the same as the i5's ...it's legitimacy is always on the line. Within a year or two you'll see it struggling with over 90% usage on modern titles.

If you're on a budget however and want a good performance for a year or so, sure , why not.

If you want a CPU that'll last long term and handle modern titles easily without castrating your newly bought high end GPU, don't get i3, or even an i5.
