I would assume VW probably used that speedometer for other cars that could reach that speed, or maybe they just wanted it to look faster :D

By law car manufacturers must make their car speedometers read fast - generally between 5-10%.

looks like you either have miscalculated your 5% error which would allow for a max speed of 164km/h if the car was still new - which it obviously isnt.

No if it came in for a service or MOT I'd make it very clear on the checklist that the tires are wrong for this car and the customer should get them changed asap for safety reasons.

Yeah it may look nice but what about safety when driving it, safety for you and other people on the road come first. This is what normal people don't understand but when you are training to be a technician you've got to look for things that are potential hazards.

ok sure but smaller tires alone wont kill anyone if done right.if youre a responsable driver itll be fine and if youre not a stock car wont keep you from running over 20 people in the city while texting

A 5% variance isn't significant enough to warrant a change. He could re-calibrate the speedo.

The stuff you learn as an automotive tech is usually to strictly go according to manufacturer specifications.

Not saying its wrong. Just saying they're generally a bit too cautious.

If it was stanced i'd agree with you. That trend is just downright unsafe.

First I don't think I can mess with that other than opening the damn thing and moving the arrow back by hand. And its not the speedo - there is difference between the tires I have - my summer 175/13/70s give me like 10-15% difference while my new winter 165/13/70 ones give me 5.....

I'm calculating that with the trip computer btw while driving on the highway there are sings every 1-2 kms and just calculate at the end.

Also when we got it ,and had the right tires, it could again reach those speeds.

To both of you I'll say - I CANT BUY THE CORRECT SIZE TIRES FOR THIS CAR!

My car is with r13 rims witch by the repair manual, that I have, should fit 175/13/70 wheels BUT living in a fairly big town and went throu all tire shops everybody told me the same - you need 175/13 tires (if theres is 70 (high) they aren't for your car) and you straight can't buy these anymore anywhere (not to mention that in my 175 rims I have 165 winter tires atm).

Smaller tires doesn't affect anything else that the speed your actually moving at. I would say they are even safer than normal since you are moving slower.....

There are + sides also - this is car for holing heavy loads with our trailer where the smaller tires do help a lot (go try to carry 1000+ kilos paint in 250 kilos trailer up 7% hill in 65 bhp car - I dare you!)

It aint at all new with over 600 000 real kilometers. For the past 14 years it has over 170 000 and nothing other than the spark plugs was replaced tho. That being said the last 10 years it had https://xado.co.uk/revitalizants/1satge/1-stage-revitalizant-gasoline-diesel-engine  regularly renewed witch helps a lot with the power and fuel economy since by layering on the worn out places it basically renewes your engine!

To all that said that it isn't safe to drive at those speeds - I KNOW

Also I know it isn't safe to drive at this speed and record video at the same time xD

Not to mention that the car is a total rust bucket with 14 year old shock absorbers (I have at least 1 leaked atm also) , and everything else just holding together.

I'm insane I know!

Welcome to Bulgaria mate! Here we believe that if it fits its good, My vw golf has an alternator from vw polo, power steering from I believe Seat (it was long time ago don't remember) and others witch are just made to work. Not to mention the metal below the doors is just bended sheet metal and welded with lots of hammering to fit...

Those 14 years we had that car it was repaired only by 2 mechanics - both ex military / rally drivers that believe in the power of the drill, the angle grinder and the welder xD

I prefer it to read faster than slower. Gives some wiggle room if you happen to creep over the stated speed when passing a traffic enforcement officer.

yeah but its showing 180 , I'm sure thats at least 170 real while VW says that this engine top speed is 156

its a generic model, most companies use the same dashboard, saving money and time. So it will show different top speeds but it will still be correct, they just use the same stuff.

He means that his car's speedo is reading 180 km/h, which should be impossible if it's stock considering the spec for top speed given by VW is only 156 km/h.

Unless he has performance mods installed (which he never said he did), there's something wrong with the speedo.
