Is it possible to run SteamOS on a PS3?

Exactly as @Dan Castellaneta said. the PS3's Cell processor uses a PowerPC architecture and is not compatible with Steam OS.

Judge a product on its own merits AND the company that made it.

not possible.

1. SteamOS only works on x86-64 architecture. the PS3 uses POWERPC.

2. Sony switched off linux compatibility on the PS3 a long time ago. it was possible at first, to run a powerpc-compiled linux distro on it, but that functionality has been removed.

Early versions of ps3 can do this.

I thought you meant in later models. I thought the original ps3 could still be linux installed, and that there was a hardware change to prevent people from doing so in the rom or something.

nope, it's software a first gen ps3 with the latest sopftware can't run linux. you'd need to downgrade the software on it. that said, later models can't run linux no matter what software you install.
