A couple off years ago, I joined the macOS club, after been a windoze die-hard for years.

Drooling over the shiny Mac lappys aside, was quite the proverbial culture shock to be honest!  And yes, I still hate Finder, it sux compared to Windows Explorer.

In my first couple of weeks, I found myself putting together a list of apps, some free some not, to ease me into the macOS world.

I guess this forum posting will act as springboard for others to comment on their favourite / essential Mac apps ???

My list:

Bettersnap - Edge snapping tool

Alternative and free

Magnet - another Edge Snapping tool

Monosnap - screenshot app

istat - useful network, drive and power stats
https://bjango.com/mac/istatmenus/

NZBGETCONNECT - send to nzbget in safari
https://github.com/BreeeZe/NZBGetConnect/releases

Close your MacBook without putting it to sleep
https://code.google.com/p/macosx-nosleep-extension/

Caffeine (when I work from home and connect to vpn, this is a godsend in keeping the MacBook awake)
http://lightheadsw.com/caffeine/

Show my desktop (a godsend and its free!)

It's amazing how window snapping isn't really a thing with macOS yet. Every time I use a Mac system at school, I always end up having to manually drag to adjust window sizes to have them fit side by side. Even then, they look out of place since they won't be even. Either that or I'm missing something.

I like BetterSnap tool and HyperDock.

HyperDock gives you a preview of applications in the Dock like Windows does in the taskbar.

Check it out on the Mac App Store.

It is a thing, just only side by side.

How do you do it? Same way as Windows? Been instinctively trying to do that with no luck.

Initially I only listed tools to bring back the familiar windows functionality

Other essential apps include

* Microsoft Office (the macOS version is much nicer than native windows version)

* CleanMyMac (I missed ccleaner) - find it really useful for removing software properly

* Parallells Desktop (awesome virtualisation on the Mac)

* Flume (pretty slick instagram app for the Mac)

* Airmail 3 (the default mail app just seems lacking)

Didn't they add it in 10.12 or 10.13?

I would also recommend: Bartender (lets you hide status bar icons etc), Amphetamine or Caffeine (keeps your session from timing out they both do the same, first one is newer), iTerm is also a great terminal replacement and Find any file (a great search tool to search entire mac and connected drives for any file via name).

  • 7 months later...

Why or why didn't Apple provide a show desktop / minimise all function in macOS!  Sure you can "show your desktop" with image.png.7a09e3c1abad4e1dfdd45f4843345550.pngF3

but then that sux as a lot of the time, I want to make adjustments to stuff on the desktop without it pinging back to where I left off....

enter Show My Desktop... total godesend!
