Posted November 16, 2017 Hey all, I'm planning on building a new computer for personal use using old server gear (LGA2011), but I have a few questions. I want to use an HP Z420 gen 1 but a version2 E5-2680v2 CPU. Is that possible? Also, Is HPs Z420 board standard ATX Size or no? Can I update the bios to get the chip to work? Finally, any suggestions on commercial used systems (i.e. Dell T3600)?
Posted November 17, 2017 None of the above, but depends on your budget... if you are getting them seriously cheaply then it might be worth it, but I doubt it... a ryzen 1700 will be much faster, and newer architechture, features and connectivity. Posted November 17, 2017 What will you be doing on the system? If it's just web browsing and watching YouTube for instance, you're better off selling the system off instead. Same goes for gaming, these ancient Xeons weren't made for single threaded performance and are pretty weak because of that. That said, if you desperately want this, my advice would be the 2680v2. Should run at virtually the same clock speed thus slightly faster because it's a newer generation CPU and it's more efficient (115 vs 135W TDP). Should be supported with the latest BIOS from HP. Word of warning, a lot of Xeon workstations with a single socket are validated for E5-16xx CPUs but not for 26xx. Yours seems okay.
