@dizmo If I could squeeze out enough money for a 1070Ti/8350K would it be enough for 1440p? Dell's S2417DG has caught my eye o-o

It is written on the users manual of the monitor which I happen to own myself :P

Never tried it out to know though as I am nVidia only for y graphics cards [:

Haha, no no I meant what resolution does FreeSync go down to on that monitor. It doesn't have LFC right?

I agree with so much of that video as well. I've always thought reviewers should include a "high" setting fps count as well, since Ultra is usually a bit of fluff added on top. Nice, but not really necessary.

Oh shit, I completely forgot about G-SYNC. Let me look into some 1080p monitors and report back. I use reddit all the time, but for this build I want to buy purely new.

Went from 8350K to 8100, and to 1070Ti. Do you think the 8100 will be a bottleneck to the 1070Ti?

There's absolutely no reason not to buy a used Intel processor that's current gen. You still get the full warranty. The only difference is the price paid.

I'd get the H7 cooler. Cheaper, similar performance. Faster RAM and better SSD, but you've already said you're waiting for Black Friday so I just assume you'll get the best one that's on sale at that time. Dell usually has pretty decent Black Friday sales as well, so they're worth keeping in an eye on.

Yeah, it'd be a better choice provided you can get a decent overclock out of it.

That's the monitor I thought you'd like :P

The 27" would be a better choice though I'm not sure how much more it is.

What would framerates be at 2K/144Hz with that setup, if you could make a rough estimate?

Not entirely sure, very few people test with that combination. However you can check out this video and get a rough idea. I think he tests with a 1080Ti though.

Well 100fps on a 1080ti would probably be around 60fps for a 1070ti. Just worried about 1440p at 144Hz.

Don't really like the 8400's clock, and I'll be upgrading to the 8700K eventually. Also, my list above is $988 with a 1070Ti and the motherboard I prefer, so.

intel had to advise it as 2.8ghz base because if you run AVX instruction sets on all 6 cores it can drop to as low as 2.8ghz to comply with it's 65W advertised TDP.

But in reality this CPU will boost to 4.0ghz quite a bit while gaming and you will rarely see it go bellow 3.8ghz.

Go check benchmarks, it's a very good CPU for gaming, you don't need an 8700K.

I don't think it'd be that much of a hit. The 1070Ti with a nice OC is about as fast as a 1080 Reference. Plus the games are tested on Ultra/V High, so dropping to High will net you a lot of performance.

If you're wanting 1440p 144hz, keep dreaming. Even a 1080Ti would struggle to hit that. I always see 144hz monitors as "you'll get something over 60, which is awesome." Title to title it will of course change.

i have a 1440p Gsync monitor and to be honest 80FPS is where the ''really smooth'' zone starts, anything above that is icing on the cake but in most games 80 to 100FPS is what i consider VERY smooth and a GTX1080 can do that in all games with some very nice settings.

Didn't say I needed one, I recall saying that eventually I was going to get one.

I'll ponder the thought, but really I think it's low considering laptops have higher clock speeds than that...

Also with most Z370 board you can lock the 4.0ghz boost to all the cores it's a simple setting in the BIOS.

6 cores at 4ghz (even at stock 3.6 to 4.0 ghz) its a beastly gaming CPU.

Paired with the 3200mhz DDR4 i linked you get a beastly gaming machine, trow in a powerful gaming GPU and a nice 1440p monitor and off you go.

Also consider an oculus rift cause it's awesome.

Yeah that's what I've heard, that 75fps+ is game changing. I haven't tried it yet, and probably won't for a couple more years.

Very true, I think it'd be a solid choice. It's the same reason my buddy is buying the 4k 144hz HDR monitors as soon as they come out; it's something that'll last him easily 5 years, if not longer. You don't have to dial the monitor down, it'll do it on it's own ;)

Sounds good, I'll ask for the monitor for Christmas or something. It should be a nice investment. Only thing I am going to hate is not having IPS, but I guess G-SYNC doesn't come cheap even for TN.

The newer TN panels are actually pretty damn solid. A lot of the time you only give up a slight bit of color accuracy, and side to side viewing angles...which honestly shouldn't matter because how often do you use your computer looking at the monitor from the side?

Well, I guess I'm always thinking TN is bad since my Viotek Curved monitor has backlight bleed worse then hell itself, but I'm sure that the premium Dell models wouldn't be like that at all.

Haha, most definitely. Plus you can always calibrate it (I think, can't recall how in depth it's options are) with someone elses settings found online. The curve also likely had something to do with the excessive bleed.

Haha, most definitely. Plus you can always calibrate it (I think, can't recall how in depth it's options are) with someone elses settings found online. The curve also likely had something to do with the excessive bleed.

Most likely lol. Getting a new monitor will be a whole nother world for me lol.

Personally, I am kind of opposed to the 8400, especially since UserBench on paper says the i3 is better by 5%..? http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i5-8400-vs-Intel-Core-i3-8350K/3939vs3935
