S7 Edge For 2018-2019?

I've been looking to upgrade from my Honor 6X to a true flagship, and on geekbench the S7 Edge (although a year old) creams my budget phone like it's nothing. We're talking over twice the single-core score, etc. The S7 Edge still has an awesome camera, plenty of ram, an amazing screen, and a great battery at 3600MaH. Should I buy it around Chrismastime, or is there something else that you think I should get?

With phones especially, benchmarks are pointless. It's all about the overall experience.

What do you use your phone for? Kind of makes a massive difference for what one will recommend.

Also, budget would be helpful.

With the S7 I'm just concerned about aging. Its already on its end of life cycle for updates and Samsung phones have historically not aged well.

Social media, pictures, music, and reading. I don't game and I don't watch Netflix on my phones really. My max budget is $400-$450.

What do you mean by it being at the end of it's life cycle for updates? The phone is still new! It's only one generation old, because it came out in 2016.

For Android devices that's old. It will be lucky to ever get the latest Version of Android.

I'd get something like a Zenfone 3 Zoom, Moto Z2 Play with battery mod, Axon 7 or something like that instead. Possibly the new OnePlus 5T, though I'm not a fan of the company. They'll all have excellent battery life. The Sony XZ Premium is also a great choice, with its slowmo camera.

Other phones you can look at are the G6, Zenfone 3 Zoom, V30, OP5/5T. If your carrier uses GSM band you can get this which absolutely shits all over the big name flagships. Give it a custom rom and have a good laugh.

One really big Gotcha with that phone on T-Mobile is that, while the hardware is capable of using the 700MHz LTE band, T-Mobile will not actually allow the use of that band (or VoLTE) on an "uncertified" device. While no fault of the hardware itself, is a really very shitty gotcha for those on the edge of the boonies.

(And keep note I rarely use such language).

Well judging by the fact that T-Mobile is still running, I suppose their customers are fine with getting bent over

Considering T-Mobile is the only carrier to offer unlimited video streaming while tethered, for myself, it's either getting bent over by them, or by Comcast. Not exactly many options for internet.

The S7 Edge is still fantastic hardware. I have no idea why people make such a big deal of having the latest Android version. The phone will still work regardless...

If you want the latest software just get a ROM from XDA. What most people don't get about a phone's true longevity, is that a big battery and community support will give you a lot more than official software support. S7 Edge has a fantastic screen and battery. Snapdragon 820 is still plenty powerful and retains both microsd card slot and headphone jack. Only downside is that its designed to be a fragile fingerprint magnet, so get it a case.

Holy balls. Is that an 821 with 4gb of ram for less than two hundred? What?????

Thanks for all the great responses, guys. I really like the LG V20 because of it's DAC ( I listen to music a LOT ) but it's build isn't amazing I've heard and it's screen is sub par.

Screen, sound quality and battery are the most important things to me so I think I have it narrowed down to the S7 Edge or the G6. I like the v30 but it's out of my budget.

Less than $200 yes

I don't think it's OLED. I don't see that anywhere

Less than $200 yes. But its GSM only

Not OLED. The display is good, but certainly not OLED. Also, Camera is one of the weak points here. It isn't terrible, but it isn't standout either. Using a modified Google Camera is a big help though, but note the lack of OiS. Compared to any other device at this price point however, it wallops them all.
