Hey guys so I have an okay knowledge and how Wi-fi works and internet and I know for a fact that the reasons my speeds have gone down is because I’ve put the right next to my speaker amplifier. But it’s all very OCD cable managed and can’t be bothered to change it all. I use the standard router than my provider supplied and it’s crap but if I bought a third part router with beefy antenna help with the interference? Baring in mind I only get 25mbs down and 5 up anyway ?

Yeah most ISP provided equipment is garbage, plus you pay a rental fee that's usually around $10 a month, so over a year you've already dropped $120 on a bottom tier router/modem you don't even own.

The ISP provided hardware actually decent, at least it's enough for it's purpose, specially if you are using cable modem, the docsis is standard unlike ADSL/FTTH/ONT, the issue is it's locked box with locked firmware that almost impossible to tweak.

I'm not going to argue that renting a modem is stupid idea, but that's the only way getting internet with most ISP.

As for 3rd party router/access point, while it's vary for each household, but I personally always have a backup router/access point

In the uk you pay a one up fee for the router which is like 40 pound so we’ve not been mugged off but I think I’m gonna drop like £100 on something with some big antennas because I live in an okay sized house and my brother get 3mbps in his room and hard wiring is really an option as my parents said no ?

Most routers provided by your ISP are rubbish. They boast amazing specs on them but in reality its usually just a rebadged low end router from ASUS, Netgear etc.

If you want a decent router you'd be better off buying one. Personally myself I have a network setup. I use a TP-Link Archer VR200 my VDSL Modem and use a RT-AC68U as my router, upstairs in my room I have a RP-AC68U which acts as a reapter/wireless adapter. It grabs the wireless signal and splits it to multiple wired devices in my room and also has a separate 2.4GHz signal for all my devices upstairs. I get a wireless signal all over my house and its always full speed, its great.

TP-Link was roughly £70

RT-AC68U - £129.99

RP-AC68U - £139.99

Expensive but totally worth it.

Cooler: Noctua NH-DH15
