How to sync contacts between iPhone 8 and Macbook Pro?

I just bought the iPhone 8 and MacBook Pro, but I cannot for the life of me figure out how to sync my contacts between the two. I use gmail for my Apple ID and the contacts sync just fine to my iPad, but the messages app and contacts on the laptop never properly sync for with my phone....

Switch over to using Google Contacts with your gmail, and turn off iCloud syncing. I've never had success getting contacts to sync properly using iCloud since they don't work nicely between computers (MacOS or Windows) and always rely on Google Contacts.

Literally just use the same iCloud account on both the iPhone and Mac and select the sync contacts button in the iCloud settings panel. You have to use the Apple Mail app though.

Finally! After exporting from my outlook, importing to gmail, and restarting, everything works!
