Sandy Bridge vs Ivy Bridge

Hey, guys, I'm thinking about getting a new CPU and I currently have an i5 2500 non-K, which is overclocked to 4.1GHz in the P67 chipset and is the fastest it can go in a multiplier overclock given that it's a non-K chip. I was thinking about either an i7 2600K (£105) or a 3770K (£184) and I personally don't think the 3770 is worth the extra £80, but what you guys think? I was also thinking about a new cooler, maybe a Dark Rock Pro 3 from BeQuiet!. what do you guys think?

Many thanks, Bruno.

why are you upgrading? tbh, i'd get the 3770k for faster clocks but with that price i'd try to sell your actual cpu and get the 3770k

I7 2600k and then overclocking

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

The i5 2500, even overclocked a bit, starts to be a bottleneck in CPU bound games, such as BF1, for example.

3770k was like 5% faster than the 2600k.

3770(K) would be fine but yeah like the others said 2600(K)

Basically, older sandybridge/Ivybridge/haswell processors are still living strong in terms of delivering great gaming performance. I'd suggest an i7-2600k with a Gigabyte Z68 motherboard.

This is how I see the comparison:

  • i7-2600k (Sandy bridge)--------->i7-3820 (Sandy bridge E)
  • Only a 5-7% performance with the sandy bridge E processor with the slightly newer architecture

It basically is soldered (sandy) vs. toothpaste (ivy).

You will reach better overclocks on sandybridge and lower temps... ivy is not worth it at all!

I got a GA-P67-UD3P-B3 from GIGABYTE. It's quite a nice board, in my opinion. I'll definitely stick with it.

Well you would need a Z or X series to take advantage of the overclocking capabilities with the (K) chips.

Unless you get a locked SKU and dont want to overclock.

The P67 chipset can overclock as good as a Z68 or Z77 chipset.
