YouTube content creator copyrights

Go to solution Solved by Enderman,

Youtube doesn't have graphical content recognition, and the audio recognition only works for copyrighted works submitted by a publisher or copyright company.

This means that unless someone or the original creator sees that you used their content, your video will not be taken down or demonetized. Nobody will notice you took someone else's stuff.

Obviously this is still ethically wrong, the correct way is to contact the original creator and ask for permission to use the content. Simply putting the source in the description is not enough.

Not sure where this should go. However, long story short, I'm in college and one of my assignments is to create a YouTube video. There is a video from a specific content creator that I would like to use; however, I'm not sure what the copyright issues are. Can I use a clip from their video as long as I cite the? I have sent a Facebook message since I cannot find an actual email address for the individual. Showing the clip in my video would really make a difference, and I need to know how exactly to proceed while I await a response. Not sure how responsive this person is generally.

Thanks in advance,

Ryujin

You just need to cite the video and give credit where due. You're generally advised to only use a snippet of the video, but there's no "hard" limit aside from the entire thing as far as I'm aware.

Cool

I believe it is alright as long as you site them in the description.

Do you play Overwatch?

I do not play Overwatch, but have been thinking on getting it. I've been told Blizzard did a great job with it, and some of those aspects touch on my topic.

If I ever decided to make a channel outside of school, would any of that change since it would be outside of education and someone (Youtube/Google, not me) would make ad-rev from it potentially?

Doesn't change much, but you have to do the same. Getting the permission is the best practice whether monetized or not.

Haha, that's awesome. No, I've been using this as my online screen name since 2003, that's how I got the year on it. I'll have to look up that character on YouTube so I can hear it.

@ARikozuM @Enderman, That's what I would assume. I'm not trying to steal content by any means. They had an interaction with someone that is awesome, and I think showing 5 seconds of the interaction would leave a better impression than me quoting and describing the scene. I sent the Facebook message, so I will sit back and wait.

So, I get that YouTube is just a platform. So, lets pretend the video is from LTT (which it's not), would he have his own Copyright protection as a content creator, or is their stuff completely different than what we are used to as far as copyrights go with Hollywood movies, music, and books? I don't think LTT has done a Tech Quickie on this topic.

Yes, everyone who posts original content on youtube owns that content.

Whether you have the resources and lawyers to escalate things, that's another matter.

However I've found the reporting system on youtube work pretty well for me, just take down or take monetizing from people who reupload my videos.

You guys have been very helpful.

One last question. So, in my content, I will have some game footage. Instead of using footage that someone else has recorded and having to deal with permission to use, I'm just going to do it myself. Other than listing the game and publisher, is there anything else specific as far as that goes?

I've been given access to a royalty free music site from my university, so that part is at least covered.

Nah that's good, you don't even need to list the game or publisher, only very large youtubers sometimes have issues with that stuff.

Um, I hope I'm not invading private information, but what university do you go too?

Well, considering I will be posting this as my normal self for my university and it WILL be on YouTube per the guidelines, I unfortunately cannot give that out. I like to have some anonymity online. It is a University in North America. Now wouldn't it be weird if you were in my class doing the same exact assignment? That would be crazy.
