Alrighty, so here are the board I am looking at

Asrock z270 Gaming ITX/AC paired with an I7 7700k or possibly a 7700 (to lower watts)

or a Asrock z370 Gaming ITX/AC with an 8700 or possibly an i5 8400

I am building a Digital audio workstation.  I have onboard graphics and that seems to be fine for me.

I chose these boards because they have thunderbolt which I will use for my audio card

The question is which is a "smarter buy"   ??????

Why go with older tech? I'd go with something 8th gen. What's your budget for the case? Are you looking for something quite small? Does audio engineering use quite a few cores, or does it cap out after a few?

The case is an INWIN Chopin.  I already have my gear hooked up to it and it is running very stable.

The reason I asked the question is, do you guys think it is worth it to purchase a newer CPU and Board.  Or save some bucks and go with the older gen.

Although I already paid too much money for the i7 7700K.  I just bought it a month ago before I knew what direction I was going to take with my build.

I was looking at a few boards and decided on an ITX because I travel a bit and the INWIN Chopin is actually the best option for me.  Price, cool case, etc

At first I wasn't sure if you had already PURCHASED the 7th gen, but its now evident that you already have. No sweat! I'm an i5 8600k user (aka, using the 8th gen). I can confidently say that the i7 7700k is a great CPU for gaming and workflow.

At the end of the day, its whether or not you're HAPPY with your build. Nothing is worse than regretting what you've built for months or years. Kaby Lake is a great release. Coffee Lake is also great (though it runs hot!). If it isn't a major hassle, say "screw it" and get the latest and greatest CPU (8th generation), or save yourself time, energy, and stress by sticking with your current machine.

Feel free to reply if you have any questions!
