Quasar - My 2017 Build - 8700K, 1080Ti, RGB!

Thought I'd show my new build and ask around to see what people think, if my cables could be tider, etc.

I did have a few issues with building it, first off I snapped a USB 3 pin (still works) and the front IO pins are slightly out of line, but plug in just fine. The biggest issue is temperatures, I'm seeing as much as 85C on the CPU.

Anyway, what do you guys think?

Here's the spec list:

CPU: i7 8700K @ 5GHZ

GPU: Asus ROG Strix 1080Ti

Motherboard: Maximus X Hero

RAM: Trident Z RGB 3200MHZ
CPU Cooler: NZXT Kraken X62
PSU: Corsair HX750i
SSD: Samsung 850 Evo 500GB M.2

HDD: WD Blue 1TB

Case: Phanteks Enthoo Evolv ATX Glass

LED Strips: Phanteks 400mm RGB LED Magnetic Strips
RGB Syncing:  Asus Aura; syncs the GPU, RAM, LED strips, Motherboard and Case
Fans: 3x Be Quiet! Silent Wings 3 140 (Intake, two in the front 1 in the back)
          3x Be Quiet! Pure Wings 2 120 (Exhaust, 3 at the top)

Nice build, though I would have spent less on the motherboard and gotten full SSD storage.

All those fans seem a little over kill.

You're probably running hot because of your OC

I'd also have taken the pictures farther away to see the whole case, and not posted the sideways one

I think I did make a mistake chosing some parts. I probably should have gone with a hx850i, as now I don't have SLI support which is stupid considering I have a SLI motherboard.. I also should have got the Wifi version of my board for £30 more, i'm regretting those two things the most..

As for the fans, even with no overclocks at all, I'm getting stupidly high temps... Not quite sure why that is. I got the be quiet fans because I'm having to run my fans on max RPM constantly to keep temperatures even acceptable.

Would you use the wifi though? I find once someone's spending that kind of money you might as well invest time and a little cash into proper networking.

 

Hmmm. I wonder how much they'd actually help though, high CPU temps are generally affected most by the CPU cooler. Does it run as hot if you're not OCing it to all hell?

It runs slightly cooler, maybe 5c when not overclocked.

However, I disabled asus' multicore enhancement, messed with the LLC, turned XMP off.. decent result!

At 5ghz, i'm idling at 20-25c, and while running Cinnibench I peaked at 68c. Not too bad!

Wow. That's a significant improvement. So it's safe to say it's Asus's tweaking that's at fault?

Yeah, for sure. I've researched it and it appears the biggest problem is asus stupid 'multicore enhancement' , it tends to spike the voltage and OC the CPU out of the box.. extremely sneaky and disappointing.

But yeah, disabling it and tweaking every setting to keep the voltage as close to 1.3v as possible made a huge improvement. Temps are acceptable now

Nah, I don't have to take the vcore very high so I don't think I really need to delid. Sure, I'll get maybe 10c lower temps but there's a good chance I'll kill my chip in the process.

If you want to overclock, I'd recommend sending it into siliconlottery for $40 and they'll delid for you as well as give you a 1yr warranty.
