Really need your opinions, please!

So recently I got an 8700k... but as of recently, I realised I wont be needing 6 cores and 12 threads because I mainly game anyway (mainly PUBG, F1 2016, GR:W, BF4/BF1), I also do video editing but not as much as gaming. I currently have an i5 2500k OC'ed to 4.3Ghz (it can do 4.5-4.7 but I see no point.) I recently got a PG279Q and I can run Ghost Recon Wildlands around 50-80fps on my GTX 980 (OC'ed) depending on the scenario. I read that going up in resolution will require more GPU power than CPU. So my plan is, to buy a GTX 1080Ti FTW3 to get more FPS while keeping my 2500k @ 4.3ghz. By doing this, I can return my 8700k and Z370 board and RAM and have extra cash to compensate for the monitor and GPU or for something else. I COULD go 1080p with 8700k and keep my GTX 980 but the problem is.... 1080p. I want 144hz IPS 1440p. What are your thoughts on this?

Thanks in advance,

Sean.

a 144Hz 1440p with Gsync and a 1080ti is going to set you back more than a 8700K I think... Obviously it all depends on what you got

Keep the 2500K for now and get your gaming gear first.

You could also drop to an 8350K or 8400 while selling your 2500K system.

indeed it will but i'm prepared to pay for it. but idk, for some reason, i have a thought in my head that the 8700k isn't worth it for my scenario.

Well, the CPU is still important at higher reses for consistent frames.  However, higher memory bandwidths and more ram via GDDR5 or HBM 2[not 1 that's stuck at 4] is highly important compared to just CPU.  But, it also depends on the game, engine, and all that fun stuff via optimization.  From what I have heard PUBG is poorly optimized, so increased CPU performance would be nice in that scenario.  Also, considering you want a 144hz refresh rate at said resolution then ya increased GPU performance is ideal.  But, again consistent frames for FPS is based around the CPU too.  It really depends on how consistent you want them, though.  I use an R9 Fury+4790k for 144hz at 1080p for arena shooters.  But, ya focus more on GPU power.

well, my brother has a 1080Ti FTW3 and I'm gonna as him if I can borrow just to test out the fps and see if it will suffice. I'm not looking for really consistent frames, just enough to play comfortably.

by gaming gear, you mean the monitor and gpu, right?

the 8350k is only 4 cores though and the 8400 cannot be overclocked and is only 6 core/6threads. I'll be keeping the 2500k as a secondary system for whatever it can do :P

Then even a Haswell, Ivy, or whatever 2nd gen and up would be fine as long as it's an i5 or i7.  It only matters if they're more CPU bound games like ARMA.

well, i managed to test it and i got 92fps avg out of 3 runs on 1080ti. compared to 58fps avg 3 runs on 980.

The gaming gear would be monitor and GPU. You'll be largely GPU-bound at your resolution. For contrast, I play triple 1080 with a 1080 and 970 to see how common cards fare in this use. BF1 on medium 100% gets about 30-40Hz on the 970 while the 1080 starts at 80-110 giving more room for graphics. Rocket League at max gives 83ish on the 970 and 200ish on the 1080 (RIP 60Hz panels).

As for CFL, the gaming scores between the i5 and i7 are close enough that the cost (140, I think between the 8400 and 8700K) isn't worth it. If you're looking for the 8600K, you're looking at a very easy 5.0GHz chip on single-tower coolers like the Dark and Pure Rock with a 5.3 being capable on AIO or custom loops.
