What do you guys think about this CPU for a budget PC build?

So I have a GTX980 and an MSI AM3+ mobo for this build and I was wondering if I should go for the Amd FX8350 CPU? (for gaming) I know the CPU si quite old but can i still hold up to the latest games?

No it cant. It cant hold up to anything. The i5 6600 matches the 8350 in cinebench with half the thread count. If you want old used go with x58

Sell the AM3+ motherboard and get a Ryzen 5 1400/1600 (with a B350 board) or a Core i5 8400 (with a Z370 board). The 8350 kinda sucks. :P

The 8350 was decent 8350 days ago :D

The 980 will hold up great in the latest games, but it'll need something decent, CPU wise. Even a Ryzen 1200 would be a good starting point.

You could get him a used FX 6300/8350 on ebay for cheap and use it for now, overclock it and get by. It would still be "good enough" for a majority of pre-2017 games. That way he could at least play games while saving up for a DDR4 platform.

Jup I agree with the others. Sell the AM3+ board and get a Ryzen system. It‘s worth it.

My main system is an FX-8350 with a GTX 1070 that I use for some gaming, video editing and normal day to day stuff. I love the system. It's overclocked to 4.7ghz and runs everything I use it for. I don't play many games, mostly GOW4, Doom and now as of today Assassin's Creed Origins and it plays these games at well over 140fps. Now I also have a Ryzen 7 system that is a beast and can of course tell a big difference between it and the fx-8350, but to say the fx can't hang in games is not a true statement. I will be using that system for much longer, probably until it just decides to die or can't do what I need it to anymore. So if you can find a really good deal, don't shy away from the fx-8350. Of course Ryzen is much more sound investment for future proofing, but since you already have everything but the CPU, why not just grab an FX-8350 on ebay and throw it together? Use if for now and then move on
