So I just bought an 8gb stick of HP ddr3 ram to upgrade my PC with and when I install it, it acts like it's going to boot up but them it restarts over and over again. My original RAM works fine but this doesn't at all. Anybody know what's wrong?

Try different slots or something, or another system if you have one.

Only the one. But when I out another stick in, it still doesn't work.

does the pc boot when  you only use one stick of ram?

 

the new one

 

how many GB is the first stick

 

if the timings are different the RAM wont work together

It doesnt boot when I use one stick. The old stick is 4gbs and the timings are a lot different. The 4gb stick is 1600 and the 8gb is 1250.

the timings are not the mhz, timings are numbers youll see on the package or sticker it will be numbers separated by a dash like  9-9-9-24

 

so the 8gb stick does not work on its own then you probably received a dead stick of ram and should RMA it.

its not uncommon for pc parts to arrive dead. electronics aren't perfect

yes if a stick is 1600 and ones 1866 the 1866 will downclock to 1600. thats common knowledge

 

but from what i understand and my experience RAM with different timings dont work together

One possibility, that you new ram is not compatible with MB. Did you buy same brand.

The ram with the tighter timings would loosen its timings to match the set that has looser timings in the first place.

hmm its never worked in my rig, worked in a buddies with the same timing so i gave it to him but in my rig didnt post, not a dead slot either as all my slots are full now
