I'd get an 8600k and Z370 motherboard.

You'll still get a decent amount for your hardware now. Might as well cash in while you can.

  1. higher base clock
  2. possibility to OC on a second hand z170/Z270 mobo down the line
  3. generally only marginally more expensive than non K parts, especially on skylake

Want to custom loop?  Ask me more if you are curious

Only a fool would buy a new 7700k, or even a 7700 at this point. There's no disadvantage to buying used.

If he's buying a new motherboard, then he might as well upgrade to Coffe Lake.

totally agree, thus buying them used from people who are dashing to cofvfe and dumping i7's are a great place to get cheap upgrades.  Even then, a brand new 6700K for 200-300 bucks + 2 free games worth 120 is pretty dang good IMO

Buying a reaaally nice mobo that is compatible with your chip for 1/5 it's original retail if you want it is different from getting a BNIB 7700K + z270 mobo righ now

Ehhh I dno 'bout that. Unless they're games the buyer really wants and doesn't want to wait for the inevitable Steam sale :P

$300 is way too much (unless maybe we're talking Canadian, but even then...) when the 8600k exists. You can pick up used i7's for around $200 if not less, then it becomes a little more reasonable. I personally wouldn't pay over $180 USD. The motherboard is a solid point though. It might be what I do for my interim PC, depending on how Ryzen Black Friday sales look.

If you can get it for the right price. Honestly though, I'd look at saving up and getting something newer.

Too high. They're not worth that. You can get an i5 8400 for $199.
