7790 blew up

So I was testing the stability of my card because I have been getting rare crashes of my pc, only a couple times enough, but since I had some free time I wanted to test how stable my card was under load. I booted up furmark, and after a couple minutes it was doing fine, temperatures were warm, but not absurd, running mid 80 degrees c. I got bored, and clicked the X on the top of furmark and then everything went to hell. I heard and saw a spark and bright lit emit out of my computer case, and everything went black. As fast as i could I hit the power off switch on my PSU, and unplugged it from the wall. I opened the case, and was met with the smell of burnt plastic and these sights (attached)

 

I removed the card after it cooled a bit, and then sat around scared to reboot the computer. However, now the computer is running fine without the card, obviously I have not tried rebooting with the card installed, as I am trying to avoid destroying my motherboard or other parts or even start a fire. I am quite curious if anyone knows what went wrong, what I might have done wrong, and if the motherboard is a hazard to continue using. The only damage to the motherboard seems to be the 16x PCIE slot, luckily the transisters directly below that spot did not blow, and are only slightly blackened by the flame/spark. Would it be safe to install a new card in my PCIE 8x slot? Will this happen again, was it my PSU that may have killed the card? Also the card was not overclocked in anyway.

Computer specs are:

i5 2500k sandy bridge

TX 650W PSU

Gigabtyte GA-Z69A-D3H-B3 motherboard

128 SSD + a couple harddrives

8gb corsair vengeance 1333

and a now presumably dead 7790

Oh my. Im guessing there are no compatibility issues? Maybe a faulty mobo?  How long have you used this computer?

all power connectors were in right? Was it powered by the motherboard exculsively? If the latter is true, you got an overload of power

The bulk of the computer was built by me about 4-5 years ago. My original GPU died a bit over a year ago, and this 7790 was a warranty replacement XFX offered me for my dead 6870. Since getting the replacement the computer has run relatively well, I have gotten occassional crashes where the computer freezes, leaving the screen frozen and having to force shut down. However these crashes are rare and do not seem GPU related as it occurred seemingly at the same rate underload, and just browsing.

My previous pc/mobo had a dropped screw issue. It had burned some "wires" inside the PCB/on the back, going to the onboard audio. Those "wires" even curled up from the back of the mobo. Trimmed them down, and the system would post like nothing happened. (booting into windows did not work due to trying to start the onboard audio, turned it off and used that same mobo for another 9 years, still being used daily by my GF to watch YT and stuff)

 

Since I can only see some plastic damage, I'd say: go for it. Clean up the mobo and put an cheapish/used GPU in it, and aim for the moon.

Hmm it's goosed for sure, very lucky the capacitor next to it didn't pop as well.

Honestly thats what I think happened as well, I had the card out a couple weeks prior because I was testing a used gpu I was looking at buying (ended up being dead), thinking I must have not inserted it completely, even though it was screwed in on the IO part of the card... Crazy it lasted a couple weeks gaming and such before this happened.

I'd replace the motherboard and the PSU asap, I wouldn't trust the PSU after that happening and with it being a few years old it's quite possible that caused it. It could just be a bad GPU but I wouldn't risk it with how you can get decent PSU's cheap.

Well don't quote me on it but what ever happened you're lucky the motherboard wasn't take out O.o Anyway sucks it happened but thems the breaks with technology. Hopefully you'll get back up and running soon.
