Hey there,

I am already looking for a little processor upgrade, but my current computer is just older than a year...

My currently specifications are:

  • CASE: Antec VSK-3000B
  • CPU: Intel Core i3 4170 |  @ 3.70GHz
  • RAM: DDR3-1600 | 16GB
  • MOBO: ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC. H81M-E (µATX)
  • GPU: MSI GTX960 2GB

Can anyone of you tell me what I should do?

I really don't want to upgrade my MOBO since it's fine and my RAM is just 9 months old, but there's no any "good" processors in the Netherlands for 1150 Sockets, maybe the 4790K.

If I need to upgrade MOBO/RAM and CPU, my budget would be around €500 / $588 (Less than budget would be nice.)

I am looking forward for your reply.

Greetings,

Piggyy

What are you doing with the PC?

if it's just gaming, then the CPU is fine.

I'd really only recommend an i7 as an upgrade (4770K or 4790K)

If you get a K you'll need a Z motherboard however, if you want to take advantage of overclock, as well as a cooler.

yea true forgot about that part

so 4770 or 4790

Most of the time I'll use it to stream on Twitch and gaming.

  • Playerunknown's Battleground
  • Euro Truck Simulator 2
  • Counter Strike Global Offensive
  • Rocket League
  • Gold Rush - The Game
  • Grand Theft Auto 5
  • F1 2016

Thanks for your advice!

The 4790K is clocked 400 MHz higher than the 4790 (4.2 GHz all core turbo vs 3.8 GHz), and some non-Z motherboards' older bios versions will let you use multicore enhancement if you enable XMP, so it would be 4790 at 3.8 GHz all core turbo vs 4790K at 4.4 GHz all core turbo. Probably not worth it for the price increase, but you do get some of the benefit of the K SKU even with a low end motherboard. You would need a cooler, though, since the stock cooler would be inadequate

In EU you can get i5 8600k + Z370 motherboard for just a bit over 400€.

CPU is 270€ and you can get decent motherboard for 150€.

Sadly there isn't exactly much money left for RAM, so you could get 8GB DDR4 and stay in your 500€ budget.

But I would recommend you to sell your old CPU + motherboard + RAM and get some additional money for your budget, so that way you can get 16GB DDR4.

You could also upgrade to 4790(K) or 4770(K). Not sure if K version is worth for you since you can't OC on your motherboard, and I don't see any reason to go buying 2 generations old Z97. In that case I would rather spend money on new platform.

Once again, my personal opinion goes towards 8600k build since that one would be freaking amazing for gaming.

Intel i7 12700K | Gigabyte Z690 Gaming X DDR4 | Pure Loop 240mm | G.Skill 3200MHz 32GB CL14 | CM V850 G2 | RTX 3070 Phoenix | Lian Li O11 Air mini

Samsung EVO 960 M.2 250GB | Samsung EVO 860 PRO 512GB | 4x Be Quiet! Silent Wings 140mm fans

WD My Cloud 4TB
