It's completely legal to own belt fed weaponry where it's legal to own magazine fed, provided no restrictions on capacity.

Yeah, but I believe he was implying a fully automatic gun, so that would be illegal unless it's older than 1986 and you do a bunch of stuff to get it.

In the US, at least in the past, federal law was that any fully automatic manufacturered prior to 1928 could be bought or sold. Manufactured after that year, and buying, selling, or possession (in working order) required a class III license.
