Is the iPads 120Hz Refresh Rate Real or Strobing?

Im a HS student, and im in need of an iPad or Tablet. I normally like more Android/Windows products more than Apple`s, however there are certain apps only available on iPad (or iPad Pro), and I need them for school. Also I think that Ill go iPad Pro because it really doesnt have competitors in specs (unlike iPhones, long live Google and Samsung). However before buying the 10.5 inch iPad Pro (the 12.9 inch is huge, if I need something that big, ill probably need a Mouse, keyboard and desktop/laptop grade programs) I have some questions. The 10.5 inch iPad Pro and its 12.9 counterpart both claim to have a 120Hz Refresh Rate, but quoting Linus in his refresh rate Techquickie, most panels are really 60Hz Panels with Backlight Strobing or other trickeries. So is the iPad Pros 120Hz refresh rate real or is it BS?

 

 

Also since it has a resolution superior to 1080p (FHD) but inferior to 1440p (QHD) can you select in YouTube 1440p for a slightly better resolution in Video and some Interpolation (AA)?

Knowing Apple, it could very well be a true 120Hz.

Yes, you will get downscaling via the YouTube app, alongside a better bitrate with the video. This really applies to any device that can sufficiently play YouTube but in the case of Apple products with, say, the most recent YouTube update and, again, say iOS 11, you can play up to 2160p video (most videos at that resolution get converted to VP9/Opus, so those will only allow up to 1440p as it uses the MP4 video and audio tracks) or 1080p60 video (explained above).

It is a real 120hz, but it is adaptive. It only refreshes at 120hz when something is moving. So if you are watching a 60fps video, it will be 60hz. But if you are using the UI or playing a game, it's 120hz. So kind of like G-Sync, but it depends on the application.

I have it and still haven't figured out how to change the resolution sooo....

You can't change the display resolution on iOS devices.

Really, you can't change the display resolution on most mobile devices.

In YT, to my knowledge you can change the quality on any video

yeah, that's what I couldn't find for some reason. Maybe because I was using safari and not the app?

YouTube settings are different; click the gear icon on a video and where it says "Quality" you'll find your available options.

It's generally laid out as such on a video that tops out at either 1440p or 2160p:

1440p

1080p

720p

480p

360p

(240p)

(144p)

 

Note that the bottom two may not be available in certain instances. For videos that count as 60fps (it will show, for example, 720p48, 720p50 and 720p60), remove 1440p and add the numbers explained above to 1080p and 720p.

Yeah, Safari doesn't support changing video resolution. No mobile browser on iOS does to my knowledge.

Yup very few phones have this setting. I don't believe my s6 does but for some reason Samsung decided to put the option in for the s8/s8+

We mean on the YT app, not in the device settings. (Also, the s7 and s7 edge also support dynamic resoultion)
