I've come to the conclusion that there's no way that I can afford brand new Intel AND Nvidia parts, so I've been thinking about either building a brand new Ryzen system or building a system based on the x99 platform...I would prefer to stick to Intel, even used, and I did some research, and found that x99 motherboards have come down in price a lot, and I can get a 5820k for less than a used 6700k, but I'm mostly using the machine for gaming, which currently won't use the 2 extra cores and 4 extra threads... ugh, I don't know what to do... Any help would be greatly appreciated

if you're only gaming i'd recommend finding used intel parts, you could be lucky and find some haswell parts and you wouldn't really be sacrificing anything in terms of performance

Primary System

  • CPU
    Ryzen R6 5700X
  • Motherboard
    MSI B350M mortar arctic
  • RAM
    32GB Corsair RGB 3600MT/s CAS18
  • GPU
    Zotac RTX 3070 OC
  • Case
    kind of a mess
  • Storage

What are the other components you're gonna use? If it's just for gaming with up to a 1080, get the 8400, that should be enough.

Yeah, only 1080p... I was thinking a 1060 6GB and 8GB of RAM (that I'd already have if I used an older Intel platform) and the 8400 isn't really an option... looking for under $600

With the 1060, you'll be fine with an 8100 or Ryzen 1200, even at 1080p

I'm not going to buy a Z370 board for a non-K series CPU.

Ryzen 1200 or 1400 will do great for you.

If I were to go that route, what CPU would you recommend? Currently looking on eBay and the 4770K and the 4670K are both going for close to or over $200...

8100 for $130, Z370 board for $100, 1x 8GB DDR4 for $80. That leaves the rest for a 1060 6GB. I don't see the issue? Z370 boards are the only ones available for Coffee, and strictly for gaming, the 8100 is better than the 1200. And I don't see the reason for why you would ask about X99 and Ryzen, since you're on such a tight budget, and don't want AMD

4770k is definitely better but it had notoriously bad TMI when it came out which prompted the refresh with 4790k. i'm surprised they are both going for over 200$ thought. i guess it just goes to show how much value they've kept because of intel sitting on their ass

X99 is pretty cheap, all things considered, and Ryzen was mostly a fallback option. Hence why I said that I'd prefer to stick with Intel

X99 may be cheap for an HEDT platform, but it's still more expensive than an 8400 and a Z370 motherboard. And it uses DDR4, so you won't use your DDR3 anyway.

Choosing by brand, rather than by the product doesn't make any sense. Just get whatever is the best at its price

I see your point, but if I were to use X99, I could consolidate it with my Plex server without taking too much of a performance hit, and then sell my current server (not suited for gaming at all).

And about your brand remark, I buy Apple products because they're Apple, and they work for me. Apples to Apples (no pun intended), they're not the best product, but they've got the ecosystem and the support that I love. Went off track a little bit, sorry

What does the 5820K have that the 8400 can't do? Is it just the threads? The 1600 is an option with 6 cores and 12 threads, and the 1700 costs ~$80 more. Overclocked, they're about equivalent to 4GHz on Haswell/Broadwell for most tasks. They should be less expensive than X99.

Since it's not on very much on topic, I'll just hide the last bit in a spoiler

Spoiler

Personally, I try to buy by the product itself. Any company is able to sell whatever they want. It's up to us consumers to choose the best product, so that it benefits the manufacturers to innovate and make better products.

Personally, I can't see why you would bother "upgrading" to used,  4-generation old parts on DDR3.

If I were you, I'd get a cheap B350 board, 8GB of DDR4  and a cheap ryzen 3 or ryzen 5 CPU.

Even if it's just the 1200, you have upgrade paths with AM4 since it's supported until 2020, whereas a ddr3 platform on x99 chipset, well....
