1070ti is almost here and I'm not sure how to feel about it.

Slightly more comprehensive 1070ti specs, this is also linked in the first article I posted.

That shader count may as well make it a cheaper 1080. If they sell it for $350 I'm going to be surprised.

It'll probably be $400 though.

It says in the article:

Quote

"As mentioned above, the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 Ti is expected to have a launch price of US$ 429. Of course, the actual street prices will be somewhat higher, and there will be different overclocked versions offered at higher prices."

I still don't think it makes much sense to have a card between the 1070 and 1080... unless the 1070 goes down in price but I doubt that.

It's kind of hard to call it an in-between card when the shader count is within spitting distance of a 1080. :P

there's a lot to be said about this release. Pricing will determine how i ultimately feel about it tho.

I wish those vega cards weren't so overpriced..... actually i wish everything wasn't so overpriced lol

With Volta less than 2 years away, i don't really see a purpose for this card besides competing with vega. There is ZERO innovation from the information that was released, so Nvidias just doing some bullshit.

I meant an in-between card price-wise :P But that's exactly my point. There's about a $100 difference right now between the 1070 starting at $400 and 1080 starting at $500. (US prices I looked up on newegg) So let's say the 1070ti will cost between $429 and $450. (I find $450 to be the more realistic expectation here, except if the regular 1070 went down in price) Then we'd have three high-end cards in $50 steps from each other.

So if the 1070ti performs close to the 1080, there's no point in getting the 1080 for $50 more and no point in getting the 1070 for $50 dollars less... at least in my opinion.

With that said, let's wait for the thing to actually launch and for some benchmarks. The 1080 still has more memory bandwith, even if other specs are the same or very close.

I find this card very strange. There isn't enough of a price difference between the 1070 and 1080 for it to really make sense, unless they either plan to drop the price of the 1070, or replace it entirely. I guess we'll have to see how it performs. Though really, if you're already spending that kind of money on a graphics card, is an extra $50 - $75 really that much more?

Less than two years away? That is soon to you? That's ages. We're supposed to see a new Nvidia card before the end of next year iirc.

Also, I think you mean expensive, instead of over priced ;)

Except for those who want the best performance at that price point. I'd be more inclined to spend the extra $50.

But I guess in that case, you would make that decision between the 1070ti and 1080 and wouldn't consider the 1070 because it's the weakest of "the bunch".

Another thing I just noticed looking at some gaming benchmarks comparing the 1070 and 1080 is that in most cases there is about a 10-15fps difference between them and the 1080 mostly reaches a stable 60fps at 1440p with the game maxed out while the 1070 has problems here and there. (The benchmarks I looked at are from German site PC Games Hardware but I'll link it as a source)

So with that in mind, the 1070ti makes even less sense. I don't get how it would fit in there performance wise. 5fps more than the 1070, 5fps less than the 1080? seems a bit ridiculous to me...

Less than a year is a whole lot less than two years. Also, they're not overpriced. They're top end, they shouldn't be cheap. The amount of R&D that went into them is also insane.

I feel the 1070ti will be the budget 1080, its for those who can't justify or afford a 1080 & budget is still a large consideration when building a PC. Once you break the $500 barrier, budget is of little consequence, you are firmly in the enthusiast camp & your priority is performance.

Once you stop looking at this from a pure performance standpoint & take budget into consideration, this card makes a lot more sense.

less than 1 year is different than 2 years, you're right. Anything can happen with Volta, within 2 years is a very gracious amount of time but i dont think it will take 2 years.

Me saying something is Overpriced is just a subjective POV.

Since there doesn't seem to be any indication of "new" technology being implemented with the 1070 ti. The R&D costs would be significantly lower. The cards are using Gddr5 instead of the Gddr5x, so it'll be fairly easy for them to engineer the cards at this point.

looking at newegg.ca the cheapest 1070 is about $516 and the cheapest 1080 is about $656. so the pricing in the Canadian market is going to be interesting to see.

The 1070 is perfectly fine for 1080p. I have 2560x1080 ultrawide and have yet to run into a game I can't max out at 60fps.

The 1070 prices must go down, otherwise, there is no market for 1070 Ti in Europe. Here is how the price positioning looks like in Germany (mostly same across whole EU):

1070vs1080at1070tilaunch.png.186f5a6e906c0bc47811e0b1f5b0b574.png

As you can see the price gap between 1070 and 1080 is already quite small. Some 1070 nonreference models cost just 20-30 EUR less than an entry 1080. Now according to Hexus, the 1070 Ti's MRSP will be $429. As per usual, the US prices never translate to the European market that well. We can easily expect that the cost of getting a 1070 Ti will  be around 480-500 EUR in Germany. I suspect that the 1070 prices will go down by 10~20%, to make room for 1070 Ti (at least in the EU).
