i3 7100 or my older i5?

I have an older i5 2***. Should I use it or go for an i3 7100. I am new to this and don't know if I will gain an increase in performance as the i3 has quite a higher clock speed.

Don't get an i3 7100. If you want to upgrade, save up to get a Ryzen 5 1400/1600 or an i5-8400 ;)

If it's enough for you sure you could look at an upgrade. One of the choices @PCGuy_5960 mentioned would be good.

You can't compare a quad core CPU with a dual core one with hyperthreading even if your i5 is older. 

 

Upgrading your CPU really depends on what you are doing with your PC. It's unnecessary if you mainly play e-sport titles and older games.

You'll need an upgrade if you do production work like video editing or you are planning to get a new graphics card that you know is gonna be bottlenecked by your current CPU. Don't waste your money on something that you don't need. 

 

In my opinion, aim at least for a quad core CPU if your budget is limited. Otherwise the new 6 core i5 are going to be a much better bet if you don't upgrade often.
