iMac - Goes Kaput and shut itself down

Hi everyone, still new to the forum and getting my hands dirty with Linux (again been a long while since I used it).

I have a problems that I am trying to solved, so I can bring my iMac 24" back to happy life. In the past 6 months (more or less) my iMac has been shutting down for no reason. In the middle of me trying to browse the web, working on others things and sometimes at start up. I have replaced the hard drive, and memory thinking that those were the problem. But it is still doing it. Not sure what to do to fix the problem at this point. Some guidance would be greatly appriciated in solving this problem.

Thanks in advance,

LD

Sounds like it's overheating, when did you last blow the dust out of it and/or replace thermal compound?

I blow out the dust few weeks ago when I replaced the hard drive and memory, but have not replace the thermal compound.

do you know which gpu is in it?

these old imac's are known for getting so hot that the gpu dies.

it could have died. you are using an 8 year old machine.

i had a 2008 macbook, with the dreaded 8600m gt. i reflowed the board, and it worked for a few hours, then it shutdown and died again... you might just be unlucky.

what version of osx are you using on the imac? you might be able to look through the system logs, and figure out why the system restarts.

It's working, it just keeps shutting down for no reason at different times. Especially when you are in the middle of something important.

My old 17" MacBookPro that I got way before the iMac still purring with no problems.

The latest OS X I could put on it is El Capitain. It won't let me install Sierra on it.

There was no errors found when I ran the diagnostics.
