So I have TWC internet well I guess now they are spectrum, I am a live streamer and people find it funny to hit me offline even when I am not streaming I have a VPN but they got it months ago and now it is out there. I was told by them the only way to change it is to upgrade to business internet which will severely hurt my internet speeds are there any other way I have tried having it  unplugged for 8 hours have tried changing MAC address and nothing worked.

If I am reading this right, your IP address is controlled by TWC, you can try to do a release renew from your router, but unlikely to have any immediate effect.

Might have to go offline (kill the power to the router) for a week until a new IP is assigned to you

NOTE: I no longer frequent this site. If you really need help, PM/DM me and my e.mail will alert me.

Yeah, I know of this but I cant afford to go off for 1 week because I also do school work.

They joined my game and I assume they used an IP puller and I assume a botnet since they are holding me off for hours at a time.

A residential connection is a single pipe. Even if the router doesn't allow that the traffic will still be sent to the router and thus fill up the pipe.

OP, you can get a new IP by changing your MAC address of the router connected to the modem.

how is such an action not a cyberattack? Your ISP should be on that like a flies in a garbage dump.

still wondering how they get you offline. i know that hammering the connection with a botnet is a thing but shouldn't the router be able to block that ? mine does not even allow to be pinged from outside if i don't want it to

Networking can easily be treated as roads. So say all of a sudden a constant supply of traffic is ordered to go to your driveway and try to park in your garage. Well as the traffic pulls in the garage denies them access, then they have to pull out and drive off. This causes a back up and now you are waiting in line to get to your own house.

This is essentially why DDOS attacks are so hard to prevent because traffic is there regardless of whether its allowed or not.

sooo ... only way to prevent this is a wider driveway :D or some means to block traffic before it even enters the driveway (= the last mile on the landline from the provider node to my house)

Because its not our responsibility to deal with your connection. We provide a way to reach web sites, what you do is your responsibility. Look at my last comment above about the analogy, would the state be responsibly to send out a police officer to ID and question every car because the slowing you down to get home? No. Your driveway is a way to connect to the roads and access the outside world, the state just provide the roads to do so, who uses it and where they go is not their responsibility.

considering there are licensing requirements and traffic code that is to be followed (cyber attacks are unlawful), it is the responsibility of the government (or ISP) to enforce behaviour on the roads (or connection).

eehhh.....kinda....first a wider driveway would be more traffic jam in there.

So the truly ONLY way to prevent DDOS causing an issue is stopping it at the source. Other ways, like we have, is having dedicated DDOS protection. Basically its a system that handles DDOS likey traffic at a hardware level, that way there is no processing will not affect performance. Cheapest access to that equipment is like $300,000 so for residential is out of the equation. haha

Ture they are unlawful but in reality is only intervened when a good amount of people are affected. A single customer getting DDOSed is not a big deal, but some DDOSes on a single connection can saturating edge routers causing the entire network to fail.

I get that it sucks but its still up the the customer to be responsible. Also what would you want us to do? Give you a new IP so that IP is now available to be picked up in the pool by another customer so now they are affected? And to top if off we cant block specific IP because there is no guarantee that it doesnt belong to another service that other customers use and since IPs are spoofed during these attacks most the time its not a valid way to resolve it.

You can exchange your modem as the new mac will give you a new IP. Not a fix but in a week or two someone else will get that lease and now be getting DOSed.

Doubt they will be getting hit because as soon as I go live again they will try hitting it and I wont go off so they wont do it anymore.

Not sure about TWC, but Comcast attaches the IP to the Mac address of the router. So if you change the MAC address of your router, then the IP has to change. The issue you may have is you have a modem/router combo, as most US ISP's give those out. See in my case my modem and router is separate and using MAC address cloning could change the mac address of the router. Giving me a new IP address. Besides this trick, you need to have TWC change your IP address. You might be able to find the lease time for the IP address, as long as your modem is offline before the lease expires it might give a new IP as well, as your IP address would be put back to the pool. Then when you boot the modem after the lease expires, it should go out to the DCHP server and get a new one.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

They will try to hit it for sometime. Most likely your router wasnt responding so they were not getting hits back anyway.

well it would behoove the ISP to nip that traffic in the bud to protect future and existing clients (IPs) from experiencing such an attack. Do you agree?

When did ISP's start giving a damn about their subs? If they did Comcast wouldn't be getting awards for its shitty customer service. Remember they were the Worst Company in America twice. Many other ISP's are just one step behind them. TWC is actually at the top of the list for shitty providers as of late due to the shitty nature of the merger.
