Workstation for compiling C++ applications, connected 3-6 displays, the c++ program does image processing.

H60 cooler with push/pull in that case should be fine at 4.2GHz. 6-core, 14nm, should take 2 hours to build, 2 to overclock, overnight for stability test.

 

EDIT: already purchased. Building next week. This is a build log, not some AMD shitpost

Ryzen 7 will crush this with 2 more cores. If you want upgrades to more cores then you can buy the 8 core threadripper (x399)

 

Even Ryzen for whatever reason dont fit your taste, Coffee Lake i7s will also have 6 cores and 12 threads at much lower prices.

 

The RX 580 is also so expensive. 1060 6gb and 580 8gb from other stores cost around $270

Still waiting for "Ryzen x will" to become "Ryzen x does". 

 

Ryzen overclocks terribly, still need a product that doesn't suck before a purchase happens. Threw 6 cores at it because the overclocking overhead wears off once you get to 8 or 10 core. Nobody wants a handful of terrible things, they want just a few good things :)

"will" is just a language thing. It "does" crush 7800x in all but games.

 

I'm sure you will regret after Coffee Lake's release though.

4 ghz dude. The 7800x, especially with this cooler, can probably only reach 4.3 ghz.

 

If anything, the 7800x is a bad buy. If you are buying it because you need multi thread and single thread performance, wait for the 8700k. If you only need multi thread performance, get the 1700 instead.

 

Also, for your original build throw out the extra thermal paste, the psu is a bit overkill, and why a 580 instead of a 1060

I didn't know you can run 6 monitors off a single 1060. Fill me in?

 

On my home PC I have a 130W xeon 6-core at 4.5GHz. I think this 6-core will do just fine with a H60 push-pull. I don't aim for 70C, I aim for 10C under TJMAX.

I never said the 6 core wouldn't do fine with the H60. What I'm saying is that a) the 7800x isn't worth getting and b) buying the thermal paste is kind of a waste of money.

lol this build is for a workstation inside a R&D lab. Let me tell you something about wasting money :):):)

 

I'll post pics next week. RE: 5 outputs - displayport splitters work fine. Some of the external displays are lower resolution.

I don't see how x299 makes this suitable for workstation. Unless you're trying to say something else.

 

Why wouldn't the DP splitters work on a 1060 tho?

the same reason you can connect a monitor to both DVI ports and the HDMI port on a GTX card, but only be able to use 2 of them at a time

I don't get how that has any correlation to running two monitors off one DP output.

 

At any rate, you can always get an 8700k and use the iGPU for more monitors.

-Considering the savings on the mobo and CPU though, I think it would be reasonable to swap the mobo in the future

If anything, the 7800x is a bad buy. If you are buying it because you need multi thread and single thread performance, wait for the 8700k. If you only need multi thread performance, get the 1700 instead.

 

Also, for your original build throw out the extra thermal paste, the psu is a bit overkill, and why a 580 instead of a 1060

And you're not running the fan at a really high RPM? Because the H60 is definitely not a very powerful AIO so I doubt you could cool it at 4.8 ghz without temps in the high 80s/90s or really high RPMs

I idle at 42C. When under load, it is 92C with fans at 100%. I use the BIOS fan curve to keep silent.

See my point? Yes, it's theoretically possible. But at the expense of TONS of noise, and temps that I personally would not be comfortable with.
