Hey there,

I am having some serious issues with Networking right here and as a Steamer/YouTuber who has a 100 Hour stream coming up, this is the absolute worst.

So let me explain to you what is going on.

I live in a house with 2 floors, we have our Phone line on the Ground Floor, which is also where our WiFi modem resides, then on the first floor we have setup a WiFi-Router (TP-Link TL-WR1043ND) so we can also get connection on the top 2 floors.

Now the TP-Link is connected via an ethernet cable to the Modem and because WiFi speeds on the 2nd floor were crap for streaming, I put down a 20 meter Cat 6 ethernet cable upstairs and connected that to a Smart Switch (TP-Link TL-SG108E).

My internet speeds are fine now (on average 77Mb/s down and 20 Mb/s up) but we are having a lot of problems with both the Cable and WiFi giving some devices around the house a "Limited" connection. The Limited connection can just all of a sudden occur and only to a select few devices, whilst the others are running just fine. Because I am running a 2 PC setup with various consoles for my streams, this has become crazy frustrating and I cannot seem to find the reason why it keeps on saying Limited.

I looked everywhere online, but the only solutions I could find were just for WiFi and not for problems with both and I don't know how many times I have pushed reset on my Router, but it is just not working. So hopefully anyone here is able to help me, because I am slowly getting more and more desperate here.

If you need some more info, etc just ask away.

Thanks.

-Michel

So it only happens to the WiFi? There's the possibility its interference from neighboring homes. Is it trouble on the 2.4GHz band or the 5GHz?

Check to be using your router as an access point and not cascading. If you are cascading, only one device (modem in this case) should be set to have DHCP enabled, otherwise they will run in conflicts.

I will look into this, will let you know the results

Looking into DHCP a bit more, it may very well be the cause. I tried turning it off on my TP-Link WiFi Router and my TP-Link Smart Switch, but that did not result in the Modem taking over the DHCP function, meaning I could not connect to the internet at all and had to reset my WiFi Router.

I am rather new to adjusting Router software and would not know how to bridge them or ensure that all DHCP will be run from my modem throughout the entire network.

OK IMO, what you need to do is:-

Unplug the router from the modem, but leave it ON, then connect to it with a laptop/pc/phone even, and enter the settings page. Turn ON DHCP, and assign the range from say 50-254, eg 192.168.1.50 - 192.168.1.254, this gives you addresses you can then assign manually if you want/need. do NOT connect to the modem yet!

Now, connect to the modem in the same way as above, go to the settings page and set the device IP address so that it's something like 192.168.1.2 (assuming that the router is set to 192.168.1.1, if not then adjust accordingly). Then You can turn off DHCP and connect the modem and router together again.

If you want the modem to be the DHCP provider, then just change the above the opposite way. IF you lose connection to the settings page because the IP has changed, just go into your network and sharing settings on your PC/laptop and change your devices ipv4 address to a static address that fits into the subnet you have set eg 192.168.1.10

I hope that's helpful to you. If you get stuck, post back and i'll try to help.
