I second Sandy and Ivy Bridge. You can pick them up for cheap (especially in OEM systems) and still give decent performance. Using enterprise OEM systems like a Dell OptiPlex 7010 are great because they're relatively cheap (often liquidated lease returns), and offer solid reliability as they're designed for 24/7 operation.

For $200 shipped I got an Optiplex 790 Mini Tower with i7 2600 8g RAM and 1TB HDD. After adding an ATX PSU and GTX 960 I had a decent second rig.
