Going to be building a new rig soon, debating between a ryzen and intel build. My initial plan was to wait for Coffee Lake but my concerns were how much it would raise the cost of my rig (cpu+mobo), how long it would take for me to actually get it, and if I really needed it or not. Here are the two builds, https://pcpartpicker.com/list/NFTzQV and https://pcpartpicker.com/list/TnXYkT I was really interested in Ryzen for awhile but now I am shifted towards Ryzen for a couple reasons. My main focus is gaming, so yes Intel would be better for that but I feel like Ryzen would be a much better long term option. New games will be better optimized for the more cores and therefore Ryzen will be superior. Another reason is I will also be using this rig for school work and simple productivity tasks but nothing like streaming. I need some help on this, im stuck between the two.

In my case, I went with Ryzen, but I do some modeling/renderings.

I think Ryzen CPUs will age better - but I'm not sure if I should say there will be any "Next gen" am4 chips.

Stick with one thread please:

Plus, more cores doesn't always mean better performance according to Amdahl's Law. By the time performance in games scale linearly to the number of cores, both processors will be obsolete.

It's the same thing. People will respond to the original thread if they want to. You don't need to post multiple threads.

Wait for CFL. The i5 should overtake the R5-1600 in the majority of titles given that the 6600K competes closely with it. Otherwise, you can't go wrong with either the 1600 or 7700K.

I won't argue further but I will say it's generally not allowed.

Wait for Coffee Lake, otherwise get an Intel for gaming. You'll get more FPS for your money.
