Hi y'all,

First things first, im new here. I am not sure that this is the right place to post this topic, but i can not find a board that would suit this question. If i misplaced this qeustion, i am truly sorry and i hope that a moderator/admin would move my topic to the appropriate board.

I currently have a X79 setup (spec under this post),  and i am thinking to upgrading to X299, but  i am not sure (yet) if it would be worth to do the upgrade. I like to have M.2 support and thunderbolt 3(not sure that X299 has this). Both what my system is lacking . What is your opinion on this subject guys?

My current specs:

Intel Core I7 3970X

Asus Rampage 4 Extreme

Corsair Dominator Platinum CL9 32GB

Saffire Readon R290 Crossfire

Samsung Pro 850 512GB SSD Raid 0

I'd like to upgrade to the Rampage 6 extreme
With a Intel Core i7 7820X

Other specs tbd

Thanks for the time taken to look at my topic :)

That would be a pretty huge upgrade. :D Although, you may want to wait for Coffeelake before buying

Well, just to say that the core i7-7820X is a heat generator when overclocked, so make sure to invest in a good cooling solution (custom water loop or an AIO liquid cooler). Although, when it comes to gaming performance, it does very well, but when it comes to content creation and rendering footage, it does very poor in these tasks. The X299 platform is way overpriced, especially those core i9's.

Eh, it depends on what you're doing with the PC.

M.2 is just a form factor. If you have a SSD already, then it's rather pointless to upgrade to a whole new platform for just that reason. As for Thunderbolt 3... well, do you really need it?

M.2 is special because of NVMe SSDs. I dont see why you need it unless you move huge files around all the time so the speed increase gained from SATA to NVMe is worth it.

Thunderbolt is a fast connection yes, but while laptops can connect a eGPU to it I dont see why it's needed in a desktop.

If you want more multi-core processing power then Ryzen 7 or Threadripper is where you should be heading. If you want better single core speed then wait a bit for Coffee Lake.

I have an almost exact same setup as you and overall I can't see any issues here.

If you do plan on overclocking then moving to water cooling is a solid idea as these chips will heat up far more then the 3970x ever did.

Beyond that it looks to be a decent upper mid range base to build off of depending if you are going for gaming or production.

For production though going to a 7900x or Threadripper would be wiser depending on what ratio of gaming to production you are doing.

The only real thing I can think of right now for Thunderbolt is an external HDD cage assuming that you've run out of ports/room internally though at the cost of those cages it might be cheaper to invest in 10tb enterprise drives.

"The Codex Electronica does not support this overclock."

Compared to what?  What type of benchmark would reflect this?  I would like to run it and see this "very poor" performance for myself.

I want to use multiple thunderblot points around the house and let my pc handle all of the traffic and ditch my TV connection subscibtion :P
