So I having been throwing around the idea of upgrading to windows 8.1 but because of the things I've heard about windows 8 I'm skeptical. My questions is, since I am a gamer I have been noticing that new games like Battlefield 4 have been using windows 8.1 much better than it uses windows 7. Is this something you think is going to become a trend? I am getting kind of tired of windows 7 and am looking for something new. Is it a good idea to upgrade? Any help is much appreciated.

Well I am planning on getting a Samsung 840 Evo this Christmas and I thought it would be a good idea to get windows 8 as well. Do you think this is a good idea?

That's a tough one...Because you have Windows 7 already and you won't get a performance boost in all situations.

But you also have the advantage that you'll have the latest Operating System.

I have kinda been thinking that more and more games will start to take advantage of windows 8 and by upgrading now I will sorta be "future proofing" myself.

I upgraded to 8.1 and am still using StartIsBack, and with an SSD this OS boots up very quickly. No complaints here.

Yea I have been thinking with the OS and a new SSD I will probably be booting up pretty quick and that's what I'm trying to go for.

I've liked Windows 8 from the get-go. I might be one of a dozen people who says this, but it's always been Windows 7 with a flashy start menu. Most of the important functionality is there, you just have to re-learn it.

That said, 8.1 has done nothing but improve it. Lots of great new features, and fixes for the few things I didn't like about W8.

Do I feel like it's worth the upgrade from W7? Well, if you have $100 and nothing else better to spend it on, go right ahead. But only if nothing else. If you're coming from Vista or anything older, then for the love of all things holy, yes, upgrade.

Thanks for the help man. I really have been waiting to do a clean restart on my computer. I have a lot of junk that is making for slow start ups and load times. I just think since I'm getting an SSD why not get windows 8 with it.

I think you should especially if they are features that interest you.

For me it's File History, Start Screen (yes, it's awesome, if you have an open mind, and willing to learn something new... takes on average, about a month. At first I didn't like it, but after while, I prefer over the Start Menu, it's more powerful, and with Windows 8.1, it's better balanced for desktop/laptop).

Other features I like, is the ability to open the Command prompt where you are in a folder.

Visibly faster boot, XBox Music, improved task Bar, ribbon bar on explorer (now I can have it display/hide hidden files with ease) and auto switch between wired and wireless as it detects a better connection. I also like the file transfer graph, and the ability to pause it. Moreover, I like the new file collision system, where it doesn't ask you "a million times" during the transfer about files to replace like in previous version of Windows, and the file comparison is more helpful.

Some of the UI decisions made on 8 and 8.1 must have been the result of drunken stupidity. Other than the unintuitive and unnatural elements of Modern UI, it's not worse than 7.

With fastboot and everything enabled I can boot up in 3.3 seconds. Pretty speedy if I don't say so.

Yea I know, people said the same thing about Windows 7 "new" Start Menu, and task bar. Apparently, the Start Menu changed from Vista, and also the task bar is a replica of MacOS X.

What's even funnier, is that word for word, people said the same thing about Windows 95. By having Microsoft force it onto people, much like Vista and Windows 7, people gave it chance and became staple of Microsoft products.

It's the same story every time, at every version of Windows. Nothing has changed in that regard.

The exact same comments, the exact same reactions.

And people that fuel this, because they are stuck in time, unwilling to give a chance to anything, shaking their cane at people while complaining about their old days, with interesting data. The sales of the OS is low. Interestingly enough, every 6 years or so, you have the same low performance. One Windows is a success, then other is not so much. While people that are "against change", like to associative it with how to the OS, is how they like to call suck. It actually goes in with companies following a 6 year life cycle.

In fact, if you look at XP sales, for the first 3 years that OS, which was bashed like no tomorrow on how god-awful it was. Then it increase in market share after 3 years.

But yes, like some people like to say to justify themselves "It's because of SP2". Suuuure.

I wasn't one of those people. I thought that all versions of Windows, including Vista, were BIG upgrades over their predecessors. 8 is just a money grab for Ballmer's retirement.
