I know several members on LTT will already answer with "Don't use Skype", but it's not that simple to say don't use something. It helps to give viable alternatives. Getting tired of the ads trying to communicate with IE and giving me a pop-error talking about the computer STDS known as active X. I don't use IE and would like for that not to happen. The next annoying issue I have with Skype is auto answering of calls.. Here I have that unticked in preferences as well as be in do not disturb mode..and hear a Skype call going on that I woke up to. That's just pitiful coding. Skype was going downhill, but after the MS take over, it nose dived.

Edit: Thought I should also mention the functionality I want. My wants are simple. Clear voice chat, a non convoluted UI that's logical (Google hangouts FAILS at this), support for video chat and ads that don't try to give my computer STDS

Do you need video chat? If not then look into Razer Comms. It is pretty awesome.

TeamSpeak is a great alternative but I don't see the need to use a specific messenger/voice chat type thing. Anything that has basic functions like messages and the ability to talk in good quality should be fine. I use Skype because it is simple and what I've always used.

I use Skype for gaming with friends almost every day and never have any issues... no pop ups, no intrusive ads, no crashes, no auto-answers, no confusing UI, nothing.

Hangouts is the best communicator IMO (with it's Google device integration), but the next best for you is probably Razer Comms I guess. The only disadvantage of switching is getting all of your contacts to do the same.

Does it have to be free or are you willing to purchase a software/service?

I used to be able to have a Skype experience like this, but then suddenly random pop-up once and awhile complaining about active X, auto-answering of calls even when specified not to (seriously, wtf were the devs of Skype thinking to even make auto-answer a feature?) I do like the Skype's UI, but the rest of it has become an annoyance.

Yes.

Is it something you could get used to or is it just that you don't like the features or something, something, something?

Edit: Something

Wasn't fond of needing to go through the web browser and the layout itself. Retested it just now and the audio and video quality were worst than on Skype.

I think you might want to try reinstalling Skype...

WebRTC is a great simple system and standard for communications. A demo can be found here:

https://apprtc.appspot.com/

Just pass the reference link to someone you want to connect with and you get a video and voice stream between the two, fully encrypted.

WebRTC is supported in all major web browsers.

There are so many video calling things out there. Facebook has one. Google has one. Microsoft has two.... My favourite method however is through teamviwer, although you might have to mess around way too much to ensure you don't get any echo. The echo is pretty freaking horrible if it's not set up right

I am good at computer

Pretty sure facebook still uses skype calls for theirs ;)
