Hi all!

I am looking to update my PC but I am not sure what I should upgrade next? I would like to get another 20fps or so out of my current set up or be able to move from medium settings to high setting (on average). So where would you upgrade first and what would you get? I was thinking I need a new Case (because mine is starting to fall apart), CPU, Ram, Motherboard, and SSD. I have been out of the part picking game for a few years which is why I need a crash course or at least some good places to start looking to get the most bang for my buck.

Here is what I have:

LG ultrawide http://www.lg.com/us/monitors/lg-34UM67-P-ultrawide-led-monitor

(I am not going to upgrade this, so I am locked at 60hz)(but also thinking about VR at some point...)

Intel I5 3570k (cooled by a Hyper 212 evo)

An average Asus Mobo (I can provide exact details if needed)

16gb GDDR3 Corsair 1600mhz (I would like to keep the ram if I could) (yes I know this means not the newest processor.

R9 290 4gb XFX DD https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150697

750w Corsair PSU 80+bronze modular (cant remember the exact model but can provide if needed)

120gb Samsung Sata SSD (3 years old now)

3tb of HDD space across 2 drives.

I like playing games like PUBG, Overwatch, Just Cause 3, Killing Floor, Planet Coaster, Cities Skylines and many many more!

Let's set a budget of less than $1000.

I'd get a new GPU like a 1060 or 1070, anything else wont really give a tangible FPS increase

Everything pretty good, I would start with a new GPU the 1070 https://www.amazon.com/EVGA-GeForce-GAMING-Support-08G-P4-5173-KR/dp/B01KVZBNY0/ref=sr_1_3?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1505335744&sr=1-3&keywords=gtx+1070

That one is $449.99

Then just upgrade to a better cooler, like a noctuna https://www.amazon.com/Noctua-Premium-Cooler_-Cooling-NH-L9x65/dp/B00VB3Y89E/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1505335953&sr=8-2&keywords=noctua+cpu,

and delid the i5 3570k (actually buy a proper delidding kit) to get the best OC possible.

I know cities skylines is a cpu hog, that would likely improve with a better cpu, but you'll see a better all around boost from a graphics card upgrade, a 1070 will get you to ~60fps in the most demanding games, a 1080 will ensure that the only reason you wouldn't hit 60fps is the cpu, maybe get a 3770k used if you can find a decent deal. the 3rd generation cpus had poor tim so you could delid, but be careful if you choose to do so since if you mess up your cpu becomes a paperweight, reports I'm seeing are about a 10º drop from using high quality stuff, probably along the lines of liquid metal, expect a 5-7º drop if using a good non-conductive paste.

How'd you do that? haha.

wait... nevermind I figured it out

I'd wait on a GPU unless you're going for an i7, and 1080/1080 ti.

I don't think the 1070 is a big enough jump in performance.

Honestly a lot of people see the see its and i5 3rd gen but its not really worth it for him to upgrade his CPU yet.

Firstly, your R9 290 should be perfectly capable of running games at high settings at 2560x1080. I have no problem running anything I want at high-ultra at 2560x1080 with a single GTX 970, and your R9 290 should perform similarly.

A case upgrade isn't going to give you better FPS lol. Grab a Fractal Meshify C or something if you really want a new case. I'd also add another SSD, a 250GB or 500GB 850 EVO.

Don't upgrade CPU, not yet anyway. Your 3570k is still perfectly capable. At least wait for Coffee Lake and then maybe see if an i5-8600k or i7-8700k upgrade is worth it.

GPU upgrade is going to give you the best chance at higher performance in games. A GTX 1060 is barely an upgrade from an R9 290, more of a 'sidegrade'. A GTX 1080 would be the ideal upgrade IMO since it'll kill at 2560x1080 for the next couple of years, and you can get them for like $520, which is not much more than a 1070.
