A question about data size units...

Hey guys, I am working on my CSCI homework and the assignment is to convert between diffrent size metrics (E.G. GB to Gb) and there is all of the normal units KB, MB, GB, KiB, MiB, GiB, etc, but there is also a unit labeled as K, M, G, what is that supposed to represent? Is it supposed to be Kilobits, Megabits, Gigabits, etc?

Could you post some more context to it, or is it just K, M and G? Because as far as I know, those three letters don't mean anything without anything behind it (like a B or b or whatever)

K, M, and G shouldn't represent anything by themselves to my knowledge as they are prefixes that determine quantity. Abstractly they would be 1000, 1000000, and 1000000000 but I don't know if your teacher means it in the abstract sense.

Megabyte is decimal, though we understand it to be 1024KB when it is, depending on context, 1000KB.

Mebibyte is exponential (2²⁰) and equals 1024KB.

1 Megabyte (MB) = 1000 Kilobytes (kB) = 1000000 Bytes

1 Mebibyte (MiB) = 1024 Kibibytes (KiB) = 1048576 Bytes (1024²)

 

But, when you come across someone who doesn't understand this, or doesn't accept it, please give them a free pass since it's not their fault.  If you open the properties on any file on Windows, you will see the size listed in Megabytes (MB), even though they use base 1024
