Used GTX 980 ti vs used GTX 1080

Matcen

I'm heavily debating what my next gpu should be. Right now I have a 6600k@4.5ghz 16gb of ram and a gtx 960 on a lg 3440x1440. I know my 960 shouldn't be in here right now, but when I upgraded my pc last year I didn't have the budget for a new gpu as well as the stuff I got.

I could get a used gtx 1080 for around $475 usd or a used 980 ti for around $350. I've heard if you OC the 980 ti it nearly becomes a FE 1080. I mostly just play BF1. I want to get the best bang for my buck so I'm going used and the 1070 prices seem to be the least cost efficient at the moment.

What do you guys think?

Well, if you want performance per dollar, the 980 Ti (if you can get it to 1.5 GHz), is pretty powerful. I had a 1070 (2.1 GHz) and a 980 Ti (1.5 GHz) and the 980 Ti would pull ahead, however at usually 100-150W more. In rendering the 980 Ti really pulled out a win over the 1070.

But if you have a 3440 x 1440 screen and want to game at that resolution, I think even a 1080 will struggle with that. That's quite a lot of pixels.

I have a 1080 and a 1440p ultrawide and it has no issues at all running bf1 at ultra or any game I have noticed

Edit: I had a 980ti before and that was fine as well but not as good

Well, thing is, Nvidia isn´t a big conspiracy and just takes the 980ti and boosts it a bit and calls it new.

The 1080 is ofcourse going to be better

But to be honest, I have a gtx 970 right now and I can play almost any game at 1080 144hz 60fps+, so 980ti would probably be my best recommendation

At that resolution your best bet is going to be getting the most powerful GPU you can get. I'd say the 980TI is a better deal, but it's not going to be enough for the monitor. Having said that, neither is the 1080 if you expect to max out settings. Either of these GPUs is going to be a shit ton better than your 960 so I imagine you'll be happy regardless.

if you're gonna spend that much on a 1080 get another $30 and get a new card so you have some warranty in case it develops an issue https://www.superbiiz.com/detail.php?name=GA-N108-GI&show=p

I'd rather get a 1080, just cause of the lower power draw and fact that's it's more 'future proof'.

Custom pinewood case, Corsair CX 600WRampage 3 Extreme, i7 980x (@4.2ghz) with ML240 Cooler MSI GTX 970, 24gb DDR3, 240gb OCZ Tr150 SSD + 2Tb Seagate Baracuda.

Advocate for used/older hardware. Also one of the resident petrol heads.

wouldn't at those res the 8Gb of the 1080 become way more reliant than the 6Gb 980Ti ?

980Ti still a great card and that is a pretty big price difference

All depends on your monitor and over all budget. If you can easily spare the further $100 then get the 1080. New architecture is always a win. But if the $100 could be better spent

elsewhere and you only have a 1080p monitor (and don't plan on upgrading in the next 3 years), get the 980ti.

That is pretty much true, at least in FireStrike. My score at 1530MHz is just under an FE 1080.

The bid went up to like $490 so I decided to go for a new card like you said, but by the time I clicked on that link (which I've been watching for a week) it was gone lol.

On newegg theres a card below the G1 gaming that had the same price ($519) as it as the superbiiz site, but was in stock so I got that one.

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125880

Should be here in 4-7 business days!

Is there any truth to the more expensive the card the higher it'll overclock? I've heard the K|ngp|n is like a cherry-picked chip for overclocking, but does the same apply for my price point as in that it'll be a little worse than a $570 card or something

for the most part it will OC the same as any other normal 1080, the kingpin and a couple other cards have been tweaked so they don't have the voltage limit pascal is saddled with meaning they actually can get a little more OC, but not really worth it unless you're into the LN2 scene, at least imo
