Asus HC102 mixed reality headset

Unlike Dell, ASUS didn’t give its HMD a fancy name. It's simply the ASUS Windows Mixed Reality Headset. It offers dual 1440 x 1440 pixel displays (for a total of 2880 x 1440) that operate at up to 90Hz. The HMD also includes the typical sensors you would expect, such as a gyroscope, accelerometer, and magnetometer. Microsoft’s Windows MR platform offers inside-out tracking (6DoF) systems that don’t require external cameras, and each Windows MR HMD features two front-facing cameras that provide spatial tracking for the unit. The ASUS headset also includes a proximity sensor. We’re not yet sure if that’s standard equipment for Windows MR headsets or a unique feature of the ASUS HMD.

Only skimming the details now, at 1440x1440 per eye that's up on what current high end PC headsets offer, but if used for gaming does it also demand a level up on hardware too? That compares with 1080x1200 per eye on Vive/Rift. Being based on MS' upcoming Win10 update, is this yet another VR standard to cope with? I hope it'll interoperate with, for example, SteamVR. No external tracking accessories will help with new user installation, and a mentioned 449 euros it's comparable to the discounted Rift. Not setting new pricing levels.

I truly do hope that second or third gen VR gets popular and affordable. The tech seems too good to die before it peaked.

It's already been confirmed that Window's VR headsets will work with the Steam VR platform.

Good to hear. I've not followed it that closely. We need convergence between the main players to allow interoperability, without a single side dictating the market.

Ok that's interesting, still much to evolve as far as HMD tech.
