Acer Predator Orion shown at IFA: Super Compensator?

So at IFA, Acer has announced there new Predator series of products including the Predator Orion 9000 that when max spec-ed out can include up to 128 GB of RAM, an i9-7980XE and either two GTX 1080 TIs or four RX Vega cards as well as tons of storage options.

That kind of money won't buy the configuration Acer has on show at IFA, which features an 18-core Intel Core i9-7980XE processor (the 7980XE retails for $2,000 on its own), four AMD Radeon Vega graphics cards, and 128GB of memory. Other configurations with more reasonable components—including comparatively cheaper CPUs like the i9-7900X, as well as GTX 1080 Ti SLI graphics from Nvidia—will also be available.

 

"Designed to intimidate enemies," according to Acer, the Orion 9000 has one of the most extreme l33t gamer designs I've seen in some time, with aggressive angles, vents, and enough RBG lighting to blind even the most the hardened of PC gamers. There are faux carbon fibre highlights throughout, too, along with a hinged side panel window that quickly comes loose with a click. Notably, the window has a metal mesh applied to it that distracts from the look somewhat but is required to make the machine EMI certified (something most enthusiast PC cases are not).

 

There are built-in handles and wheels, although it's doubtful the Orion 9000 is something you'd want to wheel about often. Inside, Acer is using a motherboard of its own design that features eight dimm slots, support for up to 128GB of DDR4 memory, and up to 42 TB of storage via tool-free mounts. There are five 120mm fan mounts, one of which is taken up by an all-in-one liquid cooling unit manufactured by Coolermaster. A PSU shroud helps keep cables tidy while also directing airflow.

Seems like some serious specs that gamer's really don't need except for as bragging rights.  Might make an awesome (and expensive) editing rig though...  Of course, I do like the take from HardOCP on the specs being advertised as for gaming...

EDIT: As @NumLock21 points out, some of the other new toys that Acer brought to the show include:

  • Predator X35: 35-inch 21:9 curved monitor with a 3440x1440 resolution, 200Hz refresh, 4ms response, G-Sync, HDR, 1000 nit brightness, DisplayPort 1.4 and HDMI 2.0.
  • Aspire S24: AIO DEsktop with a 24-inch 1080p display running an 8th Gen i5 or i7 in the base with an QI charger supporting up to 32GB of RAM and 2.5-inch and M.2 SSDs/
  • Acer Swift 5 laptop: 14-inch 1080p IPS laptop with 8th Gen U-Series processors that measures 0.9 cm thick when closed
  • Xtro360: 360-degree camera
  • Pawbo WagTag: Dog fitness tracker
  • All their miscellaneous gaming peripherals known as Predator Gadgets.

The only people buying this are going to be sponsored streamers that get it for free or idiots with daddy's credit card. I would much prefer to build it myself at a price point like that.

One question that comes to my mind is what kind of PSU are they going to put in this monster if you get it at the highest spec with four RX Vega Cards and the 7980XE?  Anyone want to guess what that would be on the power draw from the wall?

You are going to need a 240V supply with a SuperMicro PWS-3K01-BR (3000W).

Yeah, I was thinking it would be drawing at least 1350 to 1500+ Watts at full load so might require a small nuclear generator...

To be fully honest its not even so much the power supply that I see as an issue running a 7980xe (overclocked) with four Vega 64s (all overclocked), its drawing that much power through the motherboard. They will have to do some server-level on-board power management.
