is 400w enough?

Hello, I currently have a question if my 400w PSU will have enough power if i upgrade from a gtx 950 to a gtx 1060 3gb. my current pc has an fx-8320 clocked @3.8ghz, 1 TB hdd. 128gb ssd, 8gb ddr3 RAM. I have about $200 on me currently so I just need to know if the PSU will be enough for the 1060 thanks in advance.

You can enter your system's info into a website like this in order to get an estimate. The info you've given at this point isn't all needed to determine complete PSU usage.

If its decent quality, thats fine. Cant say I would recommend the 3Gb 1060 though, would be worth gettings the 6GB if you can.

No. PSU calculators are garbage and mean nothing. They vastly over estimate the wattage required for a computer,

Yes. The point of them is that they're over by a constant amount. They're more consistent- and if they say that you're good, then you're good.

For Example: If you enter his data into the Cooler Master PSU Calculator - it recommends 372 Watts. 

 

372<400 so there is no need to consider a higher PSU.

They're useful - you just need to learn how to use them.

I was a tech beginner at one point - and I used a PSU calculator. For an R7 370 and a i5 4460, it's recommend a minimum 620W PSU, and recommended me a 750W unit. In reality that combo uses about ~300W. You don't say.

personally Id buy a 500 watt power supply just to be on the safe side. Prices should be similar aswell.

400W probably is enough but it really depends on the quality.

Yeah i just checked my pc was a prebuild i got about 2 years ago btw but its from some company called solytech, so im not sure the quality is too good.

Im on a budget, plus my montor is only 1600x900

Sorry man, I don't know what wattage calculator you've used there, 'cause that's awful. When I entered those parts in I got recommended 333 watts.

TBH I know very little about EVGA and SeaSonic, as neither of those brands are stocked by my local store (thus I don't really research them at all). We just get some Antec, Thermaltake, CM, and Corsair PSUs.

If "solytech" made your PSU, avoid it like the plague! Solytech is the OEM of Rosewill, the highly unstable manufacturer.

So as long as they are out, but not far enough out that they state "You need" a wattage is below the PSU you already have, you are fine, but if it states a number higher than what your PSU is (which is wrong, because they are alway wrong), you freak out and buy a new PSU?

 

The "point" of the PSU calculator is to estimate how much power your computer will use, so you can get a PSU that will suffice. The problem with them, is that they don't tell you the power usage of the computer.

 

Looking at actually sources, a GTX 1060 in a computer with a 4960X uses 279W at load, which is 100W less than what your calculator calculated, and it is using a more power hungry CPU.

Damn, never heard of the company but I got the PC as a prebuild so didnt know the psu was bad, but should i not risk putting a 1060 in it and just get a new psu?

Absolutely. As they say, the PSU is the only component that can kill every other component. Don't risk killing your shiny new 1060, and instead pick up a Corsair CX450/ CX450M which, as @JDE said, corsair is the most compelling option right now.
