So one of my friends, through an employee discount from his job, could get me an R7-1700 for $86. Don't ask me what black magic he performed to achieve that much of a discount, all I know is he can get it.

I've already got a 1600X running at 4.0 GHz and my machine is mostly used for gaming with a little streaming/rendering on the side. Considering that, would any of you guys take that deal? I'm pretty torn; two more nummy cores, or just saving the $86 for Ryzen 2.0 if it's any good.

The biggest reason why I haven't just done it is the pretty decent chance I won't hit 4.0 GHz on it. I'm leaning more toward just keeping my 1600.

Current Build:

He only gets so many discounts every so often, so I'm not going to take it just to profit from it.

Build a system for him, or use the 1700, and build a 1600X system for him.

I've already offered and his is a bit better anyway (he used his other discount on a 7900X); more or less it just comes down to me grabbing a 1700 for myself or him using it on whatever it is he buys.

Like I said, biggest reason I haven't taken the plunge is possibly losing single-thread performance.

Well 4.0 isn't guaranteed so your right it is possible that you lose single core performance. Honestly if he can use the discount on something else I would because the upgrade is not very big tbh.

Can you use the deal on something like a 1080 Ti?

Regarding it for personal use - It wouldn't work as well as a 1600x @ 4.0 for gaming.  So unless you're really into rendering/workstation stuff - I'd say stick with your CPU.

Overall, this seems a bit similar to Intel's Retail Edge Program.

Nope.

Yeah that's why I said I was leaning toward just keeping my current CPU. Even when streaming I don't drop any frames or suffer FPS problems, it's just a matter of whether or not those 16 delicious threads would be useful someday since I can get them so cheaply right now. Davinci Resolve would certainly love me, but I don't spend near as much time in there as I do gaming.

But yeah, I've got a pretty golden overclock with my 1600X and it plays everything I throw at it quite nicely. I'll just save the money and see if I can get my friend to hold onto a discount for Zen 2.0. xD

Keep 1600 because your mobo's VRMs won't be able to OC R7.

The Deal is nice :)
