So i take it 960 evo is the best i can get for $200-$250

Yes, that is roughly how much you are going to get it for. I would say get a 2.5" ssd over nvme if you're not going to be moving a large amount of files/ large files, or don't need it's compactness.

NVME SSD's I would argue would have about the same lifespan over a regular 2.5". The life cycle of a samsung ssd, nvme/2.5" is about 1000 life cycles, which is 1000 * storage space, writes. Which in your case, 250,000 Gigabytes/250 TB of writing. An "upgrade" would be a higher capacity ssd (theoretically). A Samsung SSD is the best upgrade from your "really bad one".

Current ssd is only 120gb

My point being is that a 2.5" will last just as long as a NVME drive

Probably around 4-5 years. My 500 GB SSD is still fully functional after 3 years of abuse.

I wouldn't because you will just wear the drive by just wiping it and reinstalling stuff for the laptop. Will last maybe half to another year.

what should i do with the old ssd then, also a friend said that i should clone the data from my current ssd to the m.2 960 evo.

Is this a good idea ?

I'm pretty sure you can use your old SSD a temporary gaming storage. If you're copying data over to your new SSD, then it shouldn't be a problem. You can do so with Samsung Data Migration:

Why do you want NVME? By the sounds of it you'll do perfectly fine with a regular m.2 drive. Just get something like the MX300. Chances are pretty slim that you'll even notice a difference.

As for how long an SSD will last, you have to do your own calculations based on your usage. None of us can tell you that.

Likely much longer than that.

Yes, it's absolutely fine. Run a CrystalDisk test on it to make sure its health is fine and you're good to go.

It's an assumption of a "very bad ssd" that my friend used that died after 3 tb of writes (mushkin ssd).

You can't base something like that on a sample size of one. If a 960 Pro died after a month of use (it can happen), does that mean it's a terrible drive? No. I've had a 120GB OEM SSD that I've been running for over 5 years with about 12TB of writes to it. Still works perfectly fine. Most SSDs can easily do over half a PB, if not more.
