Hi all I've been out of the pc space for a while now and a lot has changed and am looking at building a new gaming rig. I've been looking at parts and reviews and have for about a week now and keep going in circles my issue is as follows. I've got 1080ti on the way and will be getting another one towards the end of the year no dramas there,  Im also keen on running a m.2 for the Os and another one for games This is where the circles begin.  I want to make sure I don't run out of pcie lanes (might want more down the track)  but the only options I'm aware of is x99 well priced now but its out dated and the other is x299 but the reviews I've seen seem very underwhelming comparing the 7800x and the 7820x to the 7700k. I don't need the extra cores but it's the only way to get the extra lanes and I'm not sure what to get as the differences are up to 30% between the 7800x and 10-15% on the 7820x in favour of the 7700k. Would be interested in seeing what people here have to say cheers

Why do you want to run m.2 SSDs for os and games? Compared to a good sata ssd there's pretty much no difference. And they're a lot more expensive.

And even if you did need 2 m.2 SSDs, you could route them through chipset pcie lanes and still have 16 from the CPU for 1080 ti sli.

Note though that if you're willing to wait intel should be releasing their next gen CPUs in a month or two. They'll come with 6 cores instead of 4 but you would be waiting a bit for them.

Interested in computer architecture? Still in middle or high school? P.M. me!

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.

I don't really need two m.2s  it would just be cool and I don't really need the extra cores it will just be a gaming machine. I might just have to go 7700 and settle

Yea but I hate waiting I've been waiting 2 years to build another pc but it might pay to

I mean if you've already been waiting two years, whats another month to be absolutely sure? I say wait for covfefe Coffee Lake

this is just my opinion but I would buy a six core instead of a 4 core just for later if you want to do any streaming or recording and having the extra cores wouldn't hurt. I would get a single 250g m.2 and just use it for software/boot drive and get an ssd to save on money and PCIE lanes. Considering you have a 1080ti you wont need to upgrade in the graphics department anytime soon. The drawbacks on buying ryzen is having less PCIE lanes but with the money you save buying with ryzen you could put more money elsewhere in your build. I would either go with a ryzen5 1600x if you are looking to overclock or go with a 6core i7k and whichever you buy definitely look for hyper threading.
