How do i build a server?

I just finished my unRAID server and it works like a charm used an old pre-built which allows more of your budget for drives to get you started great community to help you through any bumps in the road. Its free for like 30 days can even get an extension in some cases and its cheap when your ready to pull the trigger

so you actually only want to have a server so you have a server and the learning things part it more like a reason to justify to yourself why you spend the money?

ill just point out that building a storage server won't teach you very much about enterprise level networking and hardware. Though it will be useful for familiarising yourself with storage protocols, and if its beefy enough to run a few VM's then allow you to spin up a lab for learning Windows/Linux or creating virtual network topology simulators like VIRL and GNS3.

 

Managing server infrastructure and networking is nothing like building a home PC - just as doing server deployments in an enterprise environment is markedly different from just casually installing an OS at home.
